Default I'm back!!!

...to the Subie community that this, but on the other side of the globe. Picked up a 2012 brand spanking new STi in HK last week. I have only put 90km on it so far and I'm pretty excited to see what this car can do.

Let me share a little about my car shopping experience in Hong Kong. I have been eye-ing the BRZ for the longest time since it was official. I wanted something RWD, compact and fun. From every review that I have read, the BRZ seemed to offer everything I was looking for.

Fast forward to Summer 2012, the FT-86 actually made its debut in HK a few months sooner than the BRZ. I wasted no time and booked a test drive. In short, the car looks pretty good and I dig everything appearance-wise except the ugly wheels. They only had the auto version for test driving but it was alright. Yes it was no powerful but it steered pretty darn well. I was quite impressed except for 2 things: the price tag and the back seats (or the lack of). How much is the BRZ/FT-86 in Vancouver? Something like $30K max I would imagine. Guess how much they are in Hong Kong? The 86 costs a whooping HKD388K (CAD49K) and the BRZ is about HKD30K on top of that. After finding out how much the BRZ would cost, I was like f this I could pay just a little more and get an STi. So here I'm again, owing my 2nd Subaru.

Old car, some of you long time members may remember LOL

Yes it's a euro version. Unfortunately we don't get the 2.0 twin scroll goodies. The Japanese tend to keep the best things in house.

Cheers!

You are also in HK now?

We need to do a VIC reunion!
Have you joined the Subaru Club in HK (Subaru Group HK)?

I am glad that you picked the STi over the BRZ considered they are about the same price in HK.

Anyway, congratulations on your new purchase!
She's a beauty!

jal723: Yea we should totally meet up! Where do you get your car washed? It's really hard to find a place to DIY and 99% of the people here just pay to get it done. I got water supply from my complex but they won't allow people to use a hose (don't want to leave puddles of water all over).

My first mod is gonna be debadging the trunk. I want to take off the "subaru" and "wrx" letters to make it more JDM.

I go to my friend's place where the parkade has a designated spot for car washing with a hose!

What's your other plans for the STi?
Old-school performance oriented or hella-flush stance?

PM me your contact number!

Yup and they don't offer any factory options here. Only one trim and that's it. I wish at least it came with a GPS!

I don't really have any big plans for the car yet. It's got a 3 year warranty and I might as well take my time to try out the oem settings. I think this car already looks "completed" as is. On the other hand, I had to do a lot of things to make my wrx look good (it wasn't pretty out of the factory with rubber side skirts and 16" rims). The only other cosmetic change, besides debadging, would be adding a front lip. But I held back on getting the STi one because it was too common IMO. I need something more exclusive like the geninue V1 lip I had on the wrx.

So far the car feels less raw compared to my previous WRX. It is heavier and my wrx with stoptech and DTC70 stops better than the STi (no kidding). It's a much more civilized car. The steering input is pretty sharp but a little on the light side.

I have just driven the FD2r and this car back to back on some twisty roads and I have got to say.. the FD2r absolutely kicks a**! It was way easier to drive fast and I felt much more comfortable pushing that car. But this is good! It means there is still much to explore on the STi!

More pics to come!

Do you have a close up pic of your front lip? I see a lot of them online but I can't figure out which ones are the real deal because they seem to be in different size (thickness).

We've got the same taste! I went from a 2002 WRX into the 2012 STi too, though I went from black to white. I think we did a track day together, back in the day.

I agree completely with your assessment. The STi feels complete, looks pretty decent, but it lacks a bit of the feel from the WRX. The WRX felt tight and solid, whereas the STi steering isn't as engaging, the interior feels more plasticky and less solid, and the braking is mushier (I didn't have your stoptechs, so I'm comparing to only rotors/pads/SS lines/ATE).

Enjoy the car!

Some quick shots after a morning cruise.

Yes I remember your car Yes.Sir! Man that was quite some time ago.

Fellow GR/GV owners, does any of you find your car too quiet? I would definitely prefer a little more boxer rumbling channeling into the cabin.

thanks man looks pretty good!

do you also have what they called the underskirt?.. apparently there is the front lip spoiler and then a underskirt to go with it?

i really dig the lip on the prototype STi used in Nurburgring.. that's the thickness i'm looking for..

yup motorimage is the official subaru dealer in HK.. they only have 1 tiny showroom here..

woot! bumping my own thread.. I uploaded 2 new pics in the OP.. busy life here so just got a lip and steering wheel done so far.. I actually installed the rubber skirt lip too afterwards.. but it didn't turn out too well as i couldn't get it to align 100%.. i do like the extra volume though..

impression: OMG so much more downforce! the car is extremely planted now at speed over 100km/h! $700 well spent!.. ok no the car drives the same but it looks meaner..

DAMD steering wheel.. hmmmm.. i bought it because first, i wanted to keep the BT controls and second, i didn't really care about having the airbag or not.. BUT if you don't care about neither, DON'T buy it! i honestly didn't think it was worth the money and the 6 week wait.. i would much prefer my previous OMP over this.. it's a little too thick imo.. i guess if you love the C63 or new Audi thickness, then you might like this.. damd!

some coilovers should be next..

Nice buy, I wonder what other difference there are, big or small. As our two packages, regular and Sport Tech aren't a whole world of difference.

I can see you have headlight sprayers!

I love how in HK, every nook and cranny in every parking lot is used for parking. Totally efficient use of space.

In answer to the question in your OP, the BRZ pricing comes in two trim levels - "regular" at just over $27k, "sport tech" at just over $29k. All prices before taxes and b.s. fees. Not sure what the pricing for the Scion FR-S is (that's how Toyota is marketing / selling it here as), but I seem to recall it being slightly more expensive with slightly different creature comforts...?

EDIT: I was wrong - the FR-S actually sells for less.

yea dude space is scarce here.. i already have one of the best spots in the complex.. isolated and roomy enough to have my doors half opened on both sides.. the folding mirrors become a must for most of the spots..

when it's time to change seat (disabling SRS system altogether), i will change the back to an OMP or sth.. you will get first dibs YeS.SiR!

Tell me about it...

A buddy of mine in HK was complaining a couple of months ago about how there was a sudden influx of parking spots for sale (he works in a legal office), and the associated craziness in dealing with the paperwork.
