Should I be concerned with my Cobb Intake with box in the Chicago winter weather?
A friend of mine took his off for the winter in case of salt buildup on the filter. Any legitimate concerns with keeping it on? The car isn't lowered. Any input is appreciated. Especially those in the north. =) |

No. It's in a box, under a hood. Likely the worst thing that can happen is a bit of salty air starts rusting the filter mesh early, in which case buy a new one.

ive had a perrin cai on for about 4 years straight. ive been though hurricane sandy, blizzards, flooding rains, etc. and never had an issue. you arent gonna get salt buildup. it is inside the fender. there is a spalshguard there to protect the filter element.

I wouldnt worry either. My brother has the SPT intake on his 05MY WRX with no box of any sort. The filter gets dirty quick but thats about it. |

I would worry more about overboosting than it getting dirty. It seems people who have gone with the cobb in the cold weather have had a few cases of this.
Don't go around mashing on the gas in 5th gear while cruising on the highway and you should be fine. Downshift to 4th or even 3rd to pass. |

i know that the cobb is a short ram. thats the point i was making. my cai is down near the road and has never had an issue. the cobb is way up near the hood.

You'll be absolutely fine to run that intake during winter months. Unfortunately up here in Canada its not uncommon to have more salt on the road then snow. I've been running a cold air intake for the last 7 years and have had 0 issues with salt build up, rust on the other hand is a whole other bag of worms
