Made a stupid mistake and panicking about what I did. ![]() ![]() I was such in rush that i bought 2 big jugs of Shell Rotella T6 5w40 Full synthetic for Diesel engines. Poured 4.7 quarts of Shell Rotella T6 5w40 Full synthetic for diesel engines and have been driving for 200 miles so far. Have I caused any major damage to my turbo or engine? So far my mpg has decreased down to 15mpg. I meant to buy Rotella T6 5W40 Synthetic for Gasoline Engines but i didn't take the time to read everything properly. This is my plan, change my oil with the correct oil, change it again in 100 miles and replace it again in 200 miles. What is the difference between regular Gasoline motor oil and diesel motor oil? Thanks everyone. Last edited by CommonJoe; 11-18-2012 at 02:16 PM. |

You are fine. As long as the oil holds the spec that your vehicle requires, you are golden.
The T6 is a commonly used oil by a lot of people in both gas and diesel applications. |

So you bought the older Rotella T 5W-40 that also came in a blue jug? If so, don't worry about it...I read on BITOG that the new T6 formulation is still very similar but with some slight additive variation. If anything, most of the change was marketing (new look and name).
I wouldn't change it out early, that'd be a waste of perfectly good oil. Lots of us were using that first anyway because of how good it is. I'm still running it because I have a small stash of it and want to use that up first. |

There is only 1 Shell Rotella T6, so you got the right one. Yes its a diesel oil but it works very well in turbo Subarus. As the others stated it meets the requirements for a gasoline engine.

Yeah, it says diesel on it but that is the oil you want. Don't let the diesel wording fool you. You car should love this stuff. Only 1 kind. There is no gasoline version.

To those that said there's only 1 T6 oil, you're wrong. There's the 5/40 and the 15/40...yeah, I accidentally ran 15/40 for a bit...and I have a busted motor, but I don't know how much that contributed, if at all.

Using 15w40 diesel grade oil was the best switch I made, and now will always be my choice. And these guys are worried about diesel grade 5w40... ![]() |

You'll be fine, stuff holds up just fine to 14000rpms in my CBR while also being ran through the transmission gears and the 8 clutch plates. I use it in my WRX as well, it came out looking much better than the dealership oil I replaced it with. I know visual appearance doesn't mean much but it makes me feel better.

"S" is for spark ignition and "C" is for compression ignition.
