Need a Quiet Exhaust Question..lil baby dingo.

Running an 04 STi with P+L Headers, and an Invidia TBE.
Loud as hell.

Expecting a kid, and the wife has pretty much laid down the law that my exhaust has to change (too loud). OK, I needed an excuse to buy more parts anyway.

I've narrowed down what I believe my alternatives might be and was hoping for some input from guys with little kids on db's.

What do I need to pick up that doesn't involve rolling everything (Downpipe, headers, exhaust) back to stock that is nice and quiet for a lil' baby, that is would pass a wife/mother test?

Here are the options I was able to dig out of similar threads:

1. MRT
2. BPM GT
3. Borla Hush
4. Greddy Evo2
5. prodrive
6. STI axleback
7. WBR catback
8. Maddad whisper

Also.... I HATE the way the Borla Hush looks. I have an 04 STi and twin tips just irritate the heck out of me. So the solution has to have a single tip. I'm leaning to Maddad but could be easily persuaded otherwise.

Help. I have a limited time to get this taken care of.

The STi axleback is the quietest. Source: I am running the STi axleback on my current green turbo setup.

People say the whisper may be quieter than the hush but both are noticeably louder than the STi axleback.

I have the 3" catless N1 Race tbe and I have the same problem. Drones like a MF'er at cruising speeds.

Look into a Cobb cbe, that's what I was planning on doing.

Ever think about doing an exhaust with a cut out? Not my cup of tea, it's an option.

I had a "jna" Coughcough eBay Coughcough exhaust on my last STI, pretty quiet at cruise, nice tone, loud at WFO. I loved it. It's a Cobb replica too.

The cutout plan is interesting --- but too much of a hassle. I don't want to constantly be looking over my shoulder dodging and afraid of inspection tickets. And since this isn't a track car I'd just rather not.

stock axle back or a prodrive would be my recomendation....or a 2.5" stromung for a bit louder over 3500 rpm

This depends on if you wanna keep the rumble or not, hands down I believe a SPT muffler is the quitest aftermarket one out there, and it keeps the rumble. STI muffler you won't hear the rumble unless ur standing right next to it outside. I had the same problem and just bought a SPT muffler off a 10 wrx sedan and just cut/welded to my own piping. Sounds great.

From what people have tested, it really depends on the size of the turbo he's running. If it's stock or near stock, doesn't really make much of a difference.

To OP: the stock STI axleback will be the quietest and will mate up fine. IIRC, Grimmspeed has a flange to get aftermarket downpipes to mate with stock axleback easier. It'll be the cheapest and quietest solution

if you guys really knew anything about exhaust flow and the fluid dynamics of the system....you would know that what you now think is true...really isnt...true..about optimum exhaust pipe size...at least for stock location iwg turbos anyway

this whole fantasy about a 'bottleneck' in the exhaust is

actually....REDUCING the diameter of the midpipe between the end of the dp and the beginning of the axleback from 3' to 2.5"(all of the tbe really all needs to be either coated or wrapped all the way back to the muffler can to work properly.....but kiddie boiz dont know anything about thermodynamics or any of all this kinna un k00 stuff cuz it aint k00) creates INCREASED flow as the exhaust gas cools and contracts and slows down in the pipe....but this only really works if you use a straight through design muffler....but decreasing the pipe size actually CAN increase flow....a LOT...if it is done right...like coated and wrapped
but it aint a 3" pipe so it aint k00 and its wrong because it cant be right because math and all that junk

but what do i know about anything, anyway

wives tales and 'common sense' that is just faulty logic is the rule here......but actually knowing stuff aint k00

Maybe you should go back and re-read my post before you start flinging insults again.... We both stated that the STI catback won't have much of an effect on power (gain/loss) for stock or near stock sized turbos.

au contraire. i went from
3" downpipe - 2 1/4" JDM STi midpipe - 2.5" Prodrive
to
3" downpipe - 3" Fujitsubo

on stock turbo. i didn't spring for a dyno run, but accessport virtual dyno gave consistent readouts of over +10 hp and +25 lb/ft and butt dyno agrees

I've got a much larger than stock turbo fitted on my car and the stock axleback costs me 5 - 10 whp tops. I gain around 15whp with a full cutout.

You are giving up some horsepower, but it isn't very much for the amount of sound the stock axleback is able to suppress. Obviously, if you want every last horsepower you'll want larger piping but it certainly won't be as quiet

2 resonators and a cat atleast somewhere, aftermarket exhaust parts like headers dp etc to be wrapped. all those helped in my situation. it sounds subtle and smooth, not loud at all esp at idle. boxer melody when i push it a bit
but i wont disagree about stock parts. the quietest method. oh wait...what about sound deadening strategy? dynamat for instance.

My greddy evo 2 is great. Looks and sounds great. Still rumbly but quieter than most. 3 year old sleeps fine in the car

I had a Maddad Whisper before and now I have an STi catback.

The Maddad is one of the best sounding exhausts ever, and it's not loud at all. It's barely noticeable around town until you get on it. But when you get on it, it opens up and has a very, very nice tone.

The STi catback is barely audible ever. You don't hear any exhaust note, just a "whomp whomp" from the boxer rumble. I would say this is too quiet.

I regret getting replacing my Whisper with the STi catback. Also, the Whisper is very well-made. It could hang up in a museum.

cobb, maddad, stromung, greddy evo 2, and blitz nur spec RX are probably your quietest options if you want aftermarket. I've gone through every single one on your list.
