Infiniti Q50 (new G sedan) teased

Infiniti has released a new teaser video featuring its upcoming Q50 sedan. The Q50 – which will be the first Infiniti model to be releases under Infiniti's new naming scheme – will debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit on January 14.

The teaser video doesn't give away much, highlighting only the sport sedan's new headlight. From what we can see, however, it appears as though the Q50 will sport a more aggressive look than the current G sedan. The teaser video also reveals a new light band that forms the headlight's “eyebrow”, which could become a new Infiniti design cue.

Not much else is known about the Q50, but the sports sedan is expected to switch from Infiniti's FM platform to a new rear-wheel drive architecture sourced from corporate partner Mercedes-Benz. A new turbocharged four-cylinder will stand as the entry point to the Q50 range, but it remains unknown if the G's current 3.7L V6 will remain on offer. Infiniti has confirmed plans for a new 550 horsepower 3.0L V6 earmarked for a flagship sedan, so it's possible that mill could end up beneath the hood of a high-performance Q50 IPL model.

Some other news outlets are speculating that the engine noise doesn't sound like a VQ37, but rather a smaller V6.

Wait, 550 hp 3.0l V6? That's 183 Hp/L...

That's a serious specific output number, and for the flagship sedan, not the GT-R or other specialty vehicle.

Could make for some really tasty engine swaps in a few years. Modded 350Z anyone?

False alarm, Motor Trend puts it at 530 Hp 3.7l V6. Much closer to the current GT-R engine, built in the same plant.

The former G series is not the flagship sedan; in the press release about the naming convention change it was stated that a forced induction V6 would be offered in a new model...so the specific output/L is not THAT big of a deal.

Infiniti unveiled its 2014 Q50 sport sedan today during the 2013 Detroit Auto Show, introducing it as the first of what will be a larger global push by the brand.

It plans to debut the first car to bear its new nomenclature simultaneously though all its major markets – not just North America. But there’s more than a worldwide debut on the books for Nissan’s luxury marque. During the press conference, the brand confirmed past speculation that its future models will include both a turbocharged four-cylinder and diesel engines.

Further details weren’t revealed, and the brand already offers diesel-powered crossovers in Europe, but the announcement opens speculation that there might be a broader future for oil burners in the works at Infiniti.

Once again, the brand didn’t reveal specific details like engine displacement, but it seems likely that the turbocharged four cylinder unit will be sourced from the company’s partnership with Mercedes – possibly a 1.8-liter unit.

It would make sense given that the maker unveiled the Q50 with the same hybrid technology found in its current M35h, which it said perfectly balances power and fuel efficiency. Of course, what that “balance” amounts to is entirely subjective. With EPA estimates for the hybrid still unreleased, it’s anybody’s guess. At the very least, the current M35h gets an estimated 27/32 mpg city/highway and it would make sense to expect the smaller Q50 to do better than that.

Regarding this new Q nomenclature, I was thinking about why it seems so stupid to me, and I think I figured out why.

It's because the letter Q does not add any information. What Infiniti is doing is seemingly similar to what Volvo does, with one letter followed by a two digit number. But in the case of Volvo, that one letter actually means something. S for sedan/saloons, C for coupes, V for wagons, etc. Not so for Infiniti. In reality, the new Infiniti system is more like what BMW does, where the most significant digit of the number indicates the model series, and the letter X indicates that it's an SUV. Except Infiniti has the letter Q in front of all of their names, which means it doesn't mean anything. You could drop this Q from everything and you would still have no problem distinguishing the models.

Why does this bother me? I don't know. But it rubs the nerd in me in the wrong way.

I'm thinking more along the lines of Audi. A3, A5, A6, A7, A8? But to not be an obvious ripoff they had to be different on the SUVs than Audi, offering 2 letters instead of 1.

That's the thing: With both Audi and Volvo, as mentioned, the first letter means something. Audi has A, S, Q. Volvo has S, V, and C. Infiniti has… Q and Q.

Exactly. I can't think of another example like this. Was there a time when Audi had all of their cars starting with an A? I don't know. But in any case, I kind of get what they are trying to do (to cater to the customers in emerging markets who are not well versed in auto industry by using the simplest nomenclature), but I think they overdid it.
