Default Manuel boost controller for 2011 wrx

I was curious if a Manuel boost controller is necessary on my 2011 wrx sedan... Should the ecu be able to control it if I want more or less?

I'm getting ready to do a few things to it and just not sure if I need it.

No and No. Please do some research before you buy anything. And it's manual.

I'm going to hell... I thought of a guy in a sombrero under your hood with a valve when I read the title....

Whoever tunes your car can use the ECU to control boost (to a point, the stock restrictor pill puts an upper limit on what boost is possible) but an MBC does work very well as a boost controller for these cars.

I put my turbo xs on my 03 wrx and it didn't mind it. Just had to cap off a hose from the intake. Is that okay?

No need for a manual controller on these cars. Subaru didnt spend all that research and development into their EBCS system for nothing, expecially on these newer models. The turbo dynamics system, stock for stock, will work to always achieve your target boost whether your doing WOT pulls on cold winter mornings or on hot summer dog days. You would have to make adjustments to the manaul for changes in seasonal weather (cold=boost spikes, hot = undershooting target boost)

^^ I have not yet, i may be a little behind the times these days.

Only experience i have with a manual controller was with an old turbo'd Singlecam Civic of mine way back in the day. It was a bit of a pain to make adjustments, constantly stopping, popping the hood, and redialing it. The moment i sat down in a subaru and found out it was done all by the click of a mouse, i was hooked.

Manual boost controller is not necessary. I had one on my 08 wrx just trying out stuff and there was no real benefit to having it.

Manual boost controller:
-Easy to set desired boost level
-Pretty cheap
-Easy to install

Benefits of using oem boost solenoid
-Better control for boost levels when weather changes
-If detonation is present from a bad tank of gas the ecu can reduce boost level and save the engine
-Can run different boost levels in different areas of map.
-Tuned properly can reduce lag.

My suggestion? Go with a 3 port boost solenoid. The gm boost solenoid works very well or even better is the grimmspeed boost solenoid. Very nice product and installs nicely.

The 3 port has way better control over boost than the restrictor pill bleed setup that subaru has stock and with proper tuning makes the turbo spool a lot sooner and will hold boost better into higher rpms.

A worthwhile upgrade in my opinion.

I really wish no one would respond to this thread. OP admits to posting while driving in a public forum. Do we really want to give a guy like that advice on how to make his car go faster?

Hybrid setup is awesome, you get the benefits of both worlds. Rock solid (constant) peak boost with taper to redline. Plus the manual boost controller stops over boosting. Win-win in my eyes
