Cool Indiana Rallycross Badlands Rally Points Event #1

Indiana Rallycross™ – 2013 Badlands Rally Series
Points Event #1, May 18th 2013

Indiana Rallycross is excited to announce the first of a 4 part racing series that takes us back to the Badlands in Attica Indiana.

The Badlands isn’t just a gravel quarry and sand dunes, they have countless acres of surrounding farmland at their disposal. And what was soybeans last year is being turned into Indiana’s premiere rally track for 2013. And this isn’t freshly tilled, rutted up farmland either. This is flat, hard packed, grass covered pasture – if it looked any nicer they’d be putting in a golf course. And we have 50 acres available and are ready to make what is sure to be the fastest, longest, most exciting rally event Indiana has ever seen.

50 acres means that we can make a course up to 3 miles long including tight technical sections connected by all out straights and sweeping turns over the lightly rolling hills. And as if that wasn’t enough, we will also have short sections of dirt roads available through the surrounding woods to really give this race that stage rally feel.

Registration:
Online registration link,
$45 for preregistration. walk up registration available the day of for $50.
This event will be free for spectators, however there will be a $5 parking fee per car. Spectators are encouraged to show up, we will have dedicated spectator areas available to watch the action, so bring your air horns and cowbells.

Location
3450 Brier Rd, Attica, IN 47918
(We don’t have an exact address but this will get you close enough. if you were there for the last Badlands race, this is on the left about half a mile beyond the gate we used last time)

Google Maps Link

1.5 hours from Indianapolis
1.5 hours from Terre Haute
2.5 hours from Chicago
3 hours from Louisville

Schedule (times subject to change):
8:00 AM************** Gate opens
8:30 AM************** Registration and tech inspection
9:45 AM************** Mandatory drivers meeting
10:00 AM *********** First car starts
12:30 PM************ Lunch (Food available at Badlands entrance, or nearby in the town of Attica)
2:30 PM*************** Afternoon heats start
5:00 PM*************** Awards ceremony

Weather Policy:
This event will be held rain or shine. We are not expecting to have any issues with the track even in the event of rain.

Safety:
Safety is our number 1 goal. We want everyone to have a good time, but safety comes first.
Safety rules:

1.****** Every driver, rider, and spectator must sign a waiver upon entering the property
2.****** Absolutely no alcohol or drugs on the property
3.****** No burnouts, drifting, or speeding the parking area or on Brier Rd.
4.****** DOT certified helmets required by all drivers and passengers
5.****** Windows must be up while racing
6.****** Spectators must stay in the designated areas
7.****** Any safety concerns or questions should be brought up with a safety steward or race organizer.

Vehicles must be in good running order and must undergo a quick safety inspection. The safety steward will look for things including:

1.****** Battery secured
2.****** Engine fluid levels
3.****** loose items in car
4.****** Wheels and suspension components not loose

Car Classes and Scoring:

Cars will be divided into 4 classes based on modifications and power level. Car classing is subjective and race officials will have the final say on which class cars should be entered in to.

D Class: stock and low power 2WD cars only
C Class: stock and moderate power 2WD, and stock low power AWD cars
B Class: Modified 2WD cars and moderate powered AWD cars
A Class: Open class – modified, high power cars.

Our goal is to take a traditional rallycross and mix in the excitement of a stage rally. That means a long course laid out with traffic cones with a mix of high speed and technical sections. Cars will be sent off from the starting gate at 30 to 60 second intervals with the fastest cars first. If you’re familiar with a rally “Super Special” stage, this will be setup very similar to that.

Like other rallycross events, your final score will be based on the total cumulative times for all runs that day.

Disclaimer:

Remember, this is an off-road event on an unimproved surface. We are doing everything we can to ensure the track is well prepared and safe for all cars. The course will consist primarily of grass and hard packed dirt, however like most Indiana farmland, ruts are possible and rocks can work their way to the surface. We will take every reasonable precaution and fully expect the course to be fine for all cars and drivers of all experience levels, but at the end of the day it is up to you to decide whether or not you feel safe competing.

Final Thoughts:

We are very excited about this event, as are the owners of the Badlands. They have high expectations for participation and spectators and want to see this becoming a regular event. We’ve signed up for 3 additional events this year at the same location, probably in July, September, and November (exact dates TBD) – and possibly even more next year. We really want this to be the premier rallycross location in the Midwest.

Please pass this along, share it with your friends and anyone you think might be interested in driving or spectating. This should be a really fun event, and the more people we can get out there, the better it will be.

Thanks,
The Indiana Rallycross team

I would suggest registering and just giving it a shot. This is a new location so I can't comment directly to the surface, however I believe it's a soy bean field. I've rallycrossed on other soy bean fields and they are very forgiving, smooth, surfaces. My first time on one was with stock suspension and no skid plate and it was just fine. Get out there, walk the course, and take a parade lap. I bet you'll be ready to race after that.

Bump. Getting closer!

asked a lot if this okay for noobs, stock cars, etc...

So the general disclaimer is this: We are racing off-road, there is always going to be a certain amount of risk you undertake with that. The potential biggest risks that I see are: Ruts forming on corners, which can cause a tire to de-bead (or in very extreme cases get a car up on two wheels), And like a lot of Indiana farm land - their could be some softball size rocks that get worked up to the surface and cause issues. We'll have safety workers continually observing the course watching out for both of these and other hazards.

With that said - I think this will be a great first event for those of you who haven't raced... the aim of this race is to be as friendly, and as fun as possible. This course should be pretty damn smooth and easy on the cars. and the D and C classes should be very competitive for stock cars and new drivers.

heading back out there soon to start doing recon for the preliminary track layout and other details. Should have a better idea of course length, lap times, and items of technical interest next week!.
