1:34,8 (Evo VIII with 276hp) vs. 1:38,1 (300hp, 400nm STi 8) ??
I am really surprised. It seems that the STi is still a slug compared to the EVO. Apparently, nothing has changed since EVO 7 vs. STi 7. Do you think that the USDM Spec geometry and DCCD will make a big difference? Cheers, Devlin |

I must really be missing something
EVO 299 hp 187 ftlbs STI 300hp 299ft lbs With those #'s and almost the same weight it makes absolutly no sense how a car with over 100 ft lbs of torque more would be considerably slower. Every european mag has the sti faster straight line. This time it gets, as far as I am concerned DESTROYED in the straight line. Give me the STI and I will beat the evo in a drag race hands down. Lets get this car over here. |

Well, the Evo has like 280'ish pound feet of torque so it must be a typo. The STI seemed off the pace overall, the 5.3 0 - 60 time is especially slow. More like what you would expect of a stock sti without the PPP kit. |

I think that the US model STi will boast better numbers with it's low end torque, but who knows until we see the US mags beat the hell out of them?

Im pretty sure the US battle between the 2 might not be any different (I totally hope im wrong), I do know that the STI had a slight disadvantage on those lap times due to a longer final gear, a .6 difference, which is a lot. Im not to good on the math but it seems that the STI should have an alright ratio throughout all 6 gears matching its final to keep the evo in its mirrors, I guess the final is still a little long. As for the body roll, looks like time to shop for stiffer springs and add that tower brace that it doesn't seem to come with.

The torque on their 2.0 is the same, 300lbs at 4k, I really hope our new 2.5 can make a difference

Correct me if I am wrong, but that is a 2.0 Sti with a performance package on it. That extra .5 litre on the US version will make all teh difference in the world. Have any of you been in a 275whp WRX, then step out of it and into a turbo'd 2.5 RS with the same amount of power?
It's a mouth dropping experience. They even pull well from a 5mph roll in 2nd gear.Even with the PPP, that Sti is good for more than a 0-60 in 5.3. That was .6 sec more sluggish than then Evo, but buy the end of the 1/4 it was only .1 sec difference. (assuming the 0-60 run and quarter were done in the same run). 5.3 is simply bad driving. As for the handling. I believe the Evo may still have the advantage even without the ACD with the STi having DCCD. The Evo has alway been known to be crisp. I haven't seen a report of a US Evo getting very close to 12's stock, but I bet the STi will get really close. I think 13.47 was the best I saw for the Evo, which is still not bad. |

I never figured the 2.0 in the STi would be much better than the one in our current WRX. That's why I have always said that I would car a bit about it coming to America. My mind completey changed when I heard about the 25% bump in displacement. |

the Top Gear time for the STi is extremely slow.
the AutoCar article discussed in another thread notes that the STi is faster than the exact Evo which is tested in this article (same license plate as the AutoCar test car). The AutoCar article also notes that the STi is almost 2 seconds quicker to 100mph, so I think the STi Top Gear had (not the same one as the AutoCar test) was overly slow. Ben |

Comparing a US-spec EVO to the EVO pictured above, is comparing apples and oranges. Also comparing the US-spec jaw dropping 2.5L Turbo STi with the DCCD to the weakass STi with the 2.0L and the PPP package is also apples and oranges. It is foolish to draw conclusions from any tests done abroad, and extrapolating them to the EVOs/STis available here. Apples and oranges....more like red grapes and jackfruit. |

Of course, if posting such foreign articles will shore up the flagging confidence of the EVO shoppers in the US, then keep it up. Either way, the EVOs available elsewhere are not the EVOs you get to buy here.

Umm, yes you do. The US Evo is actually a really great handling car and is under-rated. It has plenty of power. There are several people on evolutionm.net that are running 13.5x @ 101+ their first time at the track. With those trap times and the overall weight of the car/driver it equates to 300hp. Not only is it pretty quick it has quicker steering than the Sti 13:1 and has the exact suspension and suspensions settings as j-spec Evo. There are actually people praisning the handling of the US Evo compared to euro/j-spec because they feel the ayc is a hinderence to "feeling" the car. Also, keep in mind several people that have driven the US version of both still feel the US Evo has the overall handling advantage...it is simple a better chassis/suspension design/setup....argue all you want..it's fact. The Sti will do VERY well with what they have to offer as far as chassis, suspension, etc. but it still lacks compared to the Evo. Power-wise the Sti will of course be a few 1/10ths or so quicker in the 1/4 but a few tenths is really just a drivers race. The Evo is pretty easy to drive quick with it's good lowmidrange power (thanks to twin scroll turbo) and its close ratio gearbox that keeps you in the powerband on each shift. |

This is going to be a descision that comes to personal preferences. For me personally you get more for your money with the STI. Plus I would just be kicking myself in the head if I had gotten an Evo. I would rather wait. I have already made my descision

For people who have already purchased this emasculated US-spec EVO, they will bring up any argument to justify that.
For folks who have not bit the bullet yet, I would suggest to wait a bit until the STi gets here. I used to wave the EVO flag a lot in the past....until I read about the US-spec EVO and what it is coming with, stateside. Then I read about what the US-spec STi is packing and the EVO was history, as far as I was concerned. If they introduce the AYC and the ACD in the US-spec EVO at least as an option, I would seriously look at the EVO again. Otherwise, I might take a test ride to check out how it feels but knowing what it really lacks, certainly will not consider it for a purchase. JMHO. |
