It is because they are hollow and filled with hydrogen (think Hindenburg). If you rub them up against a curb they explode. That's why everyone wants to sell theirs (and your car insurance is so expensive.)

16.5lbs, I say its just about right for a pound per inch ratio. Now, if it's going to be 15lbs and less, then it's damn LIGHT.
