Exclamation Blown head gasket and maybe cracked block

Ok, i have a thread also in the 93-01 impreza forum in gneeral community that has the whole story, if you want to read it click HERE

i have a blown head gasket. the subaru dealer said that the cost to repair my gasket, oil pump, and water pump, would be about $1900. in a worst case scenerio, if my block is cracked, i'd be looking at $3400. does this sound right to you guys?!
seeing as im very short on cash im quite miffed at the moment.

if it turns out that my block is fried as well maybe i should seek an STi swap even, but that might entail too many drivetrain issues.
help?

It does sound like head gasket problem because you said there was some crud in the coolant (I assume it's a mixture of oil and coolant). If you have full coolant, but the temperature goes up, it's either stuck thermostrut or dead head gasket. If head gasket goes, the coolant color changes sometimes. If you see white smoke coming out of tail pipe at normal operating temperature, it's usually the sign of head gasket leak or cracked block.

As for the cracked block, it "can" happen. When the head gasket goes, the high temperature can warp the head and damage it. But, it doesn't happen all the time if the gasket is replaced soon enough. So, let's hope the block or the head didn't get damaged.

$1900 sounds a little high, but this cost includes a new water and oil pump. Also, Subaru engines require more work to replace head gaskets than other engines.

you cant just upgrade the block...
you'd need a new tranny as well ...

stock tranny cant handle the added power..
also, you'll need to add a mapping system
or add a new wiring harness and/or new ECU

dont forget the new radiator, fans, crossmember and other bits you'll need to do the conversion...

all in all a conversion will cost approx $6-7k to do it correctly.

good luck

Did you even think about all the orphaned engines laying around? I know of MANY 2.5l engines in great shape left over from swaps. Most of these would be completly plug and play too. Far cheaper than what was qouted and you would have tons of spair parts....

Actually, one of the guys here in Detroit has a 2001 RS with a 2002 WRX conversion using the stock RS tranny. Seems to be holding up well so far.

There are always hardened gearsets if the need arises. I actually prefer the RS ratios to that of the WRX.

well, ive been quoted at under $1500 now from an expert subaru mechanic in rochester. i will have him handle my enigne now. its a blown gasket, im pretty damn sure now. i saw coolant coming directly from the engine....dont think thats just the termostat anymore.
to balance the cost a bit im selling my 92 legacy wagon, so if youre interested check the private classifides.

No way, RS tranny works fine!
So do the fans, radiator and most of the other bits. Crossmember is required of course.

My tip is to find someone OTHER than a dealer who charges less for labor to work on the car and knows what they are doing, unless the New York area doesnt have any Subaru shops, which I highly doubt

Default Probably not a cracked block

The subaru dealership told me that my block was cracked also. So, I took out my engine and bought another block and then I disassembled my engine. Turns out the block wasn't cracked. I was very pissed to find out that I really didn't need to pull the bottom end apart, but I guess I had to learn the hard way. My bet, it's your head gaskets and not your block. Just my 2 cents.
