Angry muffler for my 2.5 RS *UPDATE and need some more advise*

First off i would like to thank everyone for the advise on the Magnaflow muffler. I had one installed this morning cause has fate would have it the WRX muffler the moron installed on my RS broke at the welds and fell off. Anyway I took it to the shop and we got it on the lift and behold more exhaust problems . Seems like someone wanted to do their own half ass exhaust mod on the car and made custom a new quote unquote headers for the car. Not to mention the pushed the Cat back and extented the wiring with some L flange into the pipe. Anyway take it from me what a welded mess. So what to do??

question:

1. i live in CA ( smog BS and all) can i get a set of headers the are CARB approved. Maybe the Borla one??

2. Anway sell an intermediate pipe with the high flow cat in the right location?

anway the muffler rocks and gave the car way better performance. So now i just need to fix the rest of it.

thanks again,
stephen

Another vote for Magnaflow. $150 at the door from www.A-1performance.com. Part number 14815.

I vote for this exact same muffler. I think it looks great, kind of stealth, and magnaflow makes great products.

well i looked on the Magnaflow web site and i think i will go with the 14814 single outlet slashed tip.

Now lets talk size 2.25 or 3 inch? should do a complete cat-back piping or just from the axle back?

thanks
stephen

Default axle or cat-back? $$$?

I would go from the cat-back and get the 3" tip. I think a 2.5" looks to small and cheap, but that's my biased opinion. Are you buying a pre-made exhaust system or doing a custom job? Deciding which to do determines how much money you want to spend.

cat-back magnaflow sounds good performes better! I have a BPM GT 3inch for a WRX i like it but i liked my magnaflow better for sound reasons.

well upon looking over the Magnaflow web site again I have seen the 5inch round muffler with 4inch outlet with the Twist-Lock Removeable Sound Damper. See if i can keep the sound down for everyday driving. Not to mention they have some cool hangers i can use. Should look pretty good. Anyway i will do a 2.25 piping from the cat-back and just have the local muffler shop do it.

HEYYYY....I am selling my Magnaflow muffler..2.25" piping with a 3.5" tip, hangers, and even a flange on the inlet for quick removal for 100 + shipping. You could use your stock piping, or spend 50-75 more and have a muffler shop bend you a new midpipe that will bolt up...

Default WRX?

wrxdrivingbastard, I assume you drive a WRX. If so, I wouldn't go any smaller than 2.5" on your turbo 2.0. I'm not an expert on WRX's, but how about a custom 3" cat-back for that turbo? Some muffler shops may have trouble bending 3" tubing on tight radius' though.

DDMan: I'm sharp as a tack, huh? My mistake on thinking you have a Rex WRXdrivingbastard. Deceiving, yet interesting name.

I don't really want to go into details that have been given over and over again, but on a N/A 2.5RS, a 3 inch exhaust is quite frankly way too large. 2.25 is about as large as you'd want to take it. If you're planning on going turbo at some point, you might want 2.5, but anything over that is pointless unless you're going for some heavy exhaust flow, which would require pretty extensive engine modifications. The only other reason is looks/sound, and well, to avoid insulting anyone with my personal opinions I won't touch that one.

They also said 5" tip, but at one point they were discussing piping, at best I can tell, and I was responding that 3inch from the cat back is overkill.

But you're welcome, cap'n obtuse.

Yeah, they mentioned it when someone thought he had a WRX and 3" is ideal for FI. They didn't suggest using it for an RS, anyone thats been around here longer than a month knows better than that.
