Cool England Rules. England 1 Germany 0

England has beaten Germany at last, it has been 34 years since we last beat them at football, the winning goal was scored by Alan Shearer.

Wow, there's nothing like a sport that you have to wait for 4 hours before somebody scores and you get to see 713 assaults and 34 murders before you leave on a stretcher. At least in our sports, the murders occur OFF the field Don't worry, there's a sport in the U.S. that's attempting to duplicate that fine record of "nobody can score". It's called the NHL. I quit watching it years ago when they introduced rule #68,412 that makes it harder to score.

Being a Germany fan you must admit the German side is really weak as of recently. Ahhhhh... I remember the late 80s and early 90s.

Bryan - I am sorry but baseball (IMHO) sucks something aweful, so I would not be talking about the WORLD sport like that.

When I was in the US I went to a couple of ball games. The difference between that and soccer in Europe is - with baseball you can take the family, with European soccer you are better off taking body armour and an AK45.

Next up for England is Romania
interesting interview with an American fan on the news, he said that the scenes of vast numbers of fans being watercannoned was misleading as most were people who were sitting having a drink when the Police fired up the cannons and drove them away.

Anyway can the winner of the UK baseball series ( a verry minority sport here) come and play in the World Series? or does the world begin and end in North America?

HAHAHA you beat me to this post! we have actually beaten them 3 times since 66' but all in friendlies. this is the first time it mattered since 1966! it is sattelite, thats how i watched it. as for footy being low scoring i think that if american "football"
(little more then rugby with space suits and oxygen breaks!) had only one point for a TD then it would'nt be any better.

The WORLD sport is the most boring sporting event I've ever attended in person. I'm sorry, but a 1-0 game is so stupid, what's the point? Plus, every single time any team from the U.K. plays, there's a huge riot that makes ALL OF YOU look like TOTAL IDIOTS.

Yea, baseball can be boring, but 3-2 is a hell of a lot more exciting than 1-0, and I've never heard of a riot that started at a baseball game. And FYI, baseball's the third most popular sport in the U.S. Football (REAL football) is the most popular and basketball is second. You can have your favorite sport all you want but don't treat other people like they're stupid because they don't like your sport. No the world doesn't stop and end in N.A., but we have our own sports over here. You people only get upset with us over that crap simply because we don't participate in YOUR sports. Hello?? The NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL are certainly not preventing anybody from starting up a team on your soil. So don't get all upset at us for not participating in your sports when you guys are ignoring ours.

Personally, I have nothing against that very small island called England. If it were not for England,The United States most certainly would not be here.
Has anyone noticed that all of the former English colonies turned out to be very strong industrial soverign nations?

Has anyone noticed that all of the former Spanish colonies turned into corrupt, filthy, disgusting third-world nations with new governments every 6 weeks? Interesting.

What was different between the way the English ruled and the way the Spanish ruled?

And what ever happened to the French colonies?

Mandatory Sube content: I have a supercharged and intercooled Impreza that kicks ass. (what do the English call an ass? Is the slang different? Arse? Booty? Butt?)

Hey, any of you English dudes drink hard cider? Ever hear of a beverage called "Scrumpys" Looked like dirty dish water, tasted like dirty dish water.

Bryanw,
I always thought that it was quality not quantity that count's, i mean look at the size of your country to ours and it just reinforces my point that big don't mean Great
As for you guys never rioting at a Baseball game I can only put that down to falling asleep during the game, or being so fat that you can't get your lardass's to move you fast enough(except maybe to McDon**ds) or even both the reason's i have mentioned.
As for American Puftaball being the real football, it just goes to show your ignorence of History yet again in America, or will that be rewritten for a HOLLYWOOD blockbuster as well as most of the other major events in history have or soon will be.

Bryanw, the only man in Minnesota not watching hockey.

Actually, the NHL is considering (in a 20-30 year future) expanding into a European league. There are already several teams holding training camps there.

Of course the Brits won't be involved, but the Czechs, Swedes, Finns, and so forth will. As for toughness...try playing hockey with a broken arm!

Now that England and the Us have beaten Germany in the last 12mos (we beat them worse, btw) - all we need is for Canada, Australia, So. Africa, Scotland, Wales, Rep. Ireland and N. Ireland to do it!

I laugh (being an American) when other yanks bag on the REAL football - It's just like the WWF fans trying to watch Greco-Roman or Judo. They just CAN'T appreciate a technical, Think-on-your-feet type of game...but their kids will.

En-ger-land, Engerland, Engerland

PS - Don't anybody go making excuses for Germany. The game was played as it could be played, and if things were settled by reputation or "shouldas" -there'd be no point lacing up yer boots...

I don't really follow international soccer, but I've played all my life, as have all of my siblings. So, I have to weigh in here to defend the only sport I've ever played (in an organized league, that is).

Let's see, no riots in baseball. Hmmmmm, then what was it that those 19 Cubs (I think) got suspended for just this week - I believe it was rioting in the stands with the fans. I'd be interested to see a comparison of the number of bench clearing brawls in any soccer league around the world vs. the the number of brawls by the freakin' children playing Major League baseball. I'm guessing the soccer leagues are gonna come out just a weeeee bit ahead on that one. GROW UP, YOU BUNCH OF OVERPAID BABIES!!!

Let me just forestall the obvious counter argument now - "Yeah, but atleast we don't kill anybody, blah blah blah." If you think those are soccer fans that are killing each other out there, think again. Those people are soccer fans just like all the morons in Seattle a few months back who rioted outside the WTO meetings were diehard world finance enthusiasts. Trust me, true soccer(football) fans DO NOT support the actions of the hooligans. Many of those thugs/morons/hooligans don't even go to the games, they just go the host city to be arseholes. Is the violence ridiculous? Hell yes, and I'm not about to defend it. But to condemn soccer because of these morons is just wrong - FIFA has done all it can to suppress hooliganism, but FIFA isn't the police.

I honestly think that, more than just about any other sport I can think of, you really have to PLAY soccer to enjoy and understand watching soccer. I've met plenty of die hard hockey fans who've never touched a stick, or football fans who've never tried to throw a spiral, but I've met very few soccer fans who aren't soccer players. I don't know why that is, maybe because it is a relatively "new" sport in the U.S. I do know that when you've played the sport yourself you realize just how amazing the professionals are, that they can do things like it is second nature that I couldn't even *dream* of doing with the ball.

Everyone in America focuses on the low scores in soccer games. Well, is all the excitement in baseball about the actual scoring, or is it about the *almost* scoring? I watched the last three innings of the Red Sox (I luv 'em, but damn them!) - Blue Jays game tonight. Nobody scored a run in those three innings, but that didn't mean it wasn't exciting watching to see if my beloved Sox could complete their comeback from a 11-1 deficit. (They couldn't - blanked for the last 3 innings, they lost 11-10). It's the same in soccer. Sure the score in the England/Germany game was only 1-0, but that doesn't mean there was only one scoring opportunity and only one shot during the game.

Guess which sport is played by more boys and girls high school and below than any other sport in America? Yup, soccer.

Now, to defend an American sport - Ian, don't try to jam on American football. Anyone who tries to say it's soft because the guys wear pads, that real football players (Australian rules football) or rugby players don't need pads, just hasn't watched much real American football. An exhibition game is not real football. Real football is a 260lb linebacker hitting a 240lb running back with both of them running at full speed. I've watched Aussie football and rugby - the players don't HIT, they TACKLE. There's a difference. When the sound of two players colliding can be heard throughout a stadium full of 75,000 screaming fans, that's a HIT. When you wrap someone up and drag them down to the ground, that's a tackle. Trust me, I'm not trying to say that Aussie football players and rugby players aren't tough - those guys are nuts. I'm just saying that the pads the players in American football wear allow the game to be played without literally killing people.

Well, that's enough babbling. Peace and Love.

JohnF, they re-ran the VBH Westfield clip on Top Gear GTI this Saturday and I want to know if the car has the same effect on you as it did on her? Not the silly giggling of course, but do you go "wheeeeee" every time you take corners at over 130mph in yours???

Back to soccer, its about time England achieved something on the sports front, even this one win. Maybe now they'll get a taste for winning and get to the finals - ah dream on Ken....

If you guys think that football is boring, never go to a Cricket Test match, (international to you and me) how about a 5 day game that, at least over here, stands a good chance of being rained off and a draw declared. The best bit is they don't stop the coverage, so you can sit and watch the TV listening to the the commentators talking about the fact that no one is playing.
Or for real action go to Henley Royal Regatta, apparantly they do some rowing, but it is largely a social event for the wealthy and / or beutiful.
Colony wise we're not exactly perfect, but it does say something that in Sierra Leone, where we are helping the UN at the moment, a lot of locals were asking us to come back and govern the country.
