Unhappy This isn't Firestone's first time selling bad tires

Here is an article about Firestone's problems in the 70's with the 500 and 721 tires:

I guess they didn't learn anything from that.

Very interesting article, I never realized how bad their last mistake was. In comparison though this one will be much worse.

I was wondering how long it would be until someone brought that up. Back in 1976 (I was 6) my mom bought a new Mercury Montego MX that came with the Firestone 721's, while on a trip to Atlanta one of the tires shredded, when we had it towed to the Firestone dealer they replaced all 4 tires with a different model because of the problems they were having with the 721's. Lucky we didn't flip over & die, just blew the tire.

And to add to the irony, one of the biggest recalls/scandals in automotive history was the exploding gas tanks on Pintos built by.....Ford!

We used to joke that the easiest way to committ suicide was to put Firestone tires on your Pinto and go for a drive

The thing about the earlier recalls is that there were fewer fatalities b/c SUVs weren't involved. Passenger cars don't roll like Explorers.

And now Ford and Firestone are like two little kids trying to pass the buck after breaking Mom's favotite lamp.
