Default Clinging Metal noise under car...

Hey guys...first post, but I read the forum all the time.

After driving on a dirt road and hitting a few pot holes in my 03 WRX I have a noise comming from under the car.

Its only noticable when Im going slow and brake/accel...it sounds like metal gently clinging against metal somewhere under the car around the drivers side.

In was wondering if any of you could tell me what it might be before I carry it to the Subby dealership.

Thanks.

I'm not sure what metal sounds like when it 'clings' but you should probably check between your rotors and dust shields for a pebble/stone.

i have the same thing happening. it's not really "clinging" more like a "click" or slight crunch.

it feels as if it's under the car, near the gas and clutch pedal. it happens occasionally, but like said above, only when braking, slowing down, and stopping.

you feel it through your feet, at first i thought the floor mat wasn't on right, but that wasn't it. i have no idea what is the problem.

Go to a large, open, empty parking lot and after making sure that there is nothing to hit....accelerate briskly in reverse and brake HARD...repeat several times and see if that helps
You may want to also do this in a slight curve...ie with the wheel turned a bit either way...so the car is traveling in an arc...as well a couple times.

Don't get busted

I've got a sound I would describe as similar, although it happens while accelerating through a hard turn. It especially happens if I hit small bumbs, like a rough free way on ramp, if the front tires hop at all. It's more like a 'clunk', feels like its right under the pedels, maybe a little in front, maybe more in the middle, but I can feel it through the pedals.

What's up with this brisk reverse and hard braking, trying to shoot pebbles back out??

Mine definately isn't a pebble...maybe more like motor mount?

Sounds like the transverse link(control arm) mount may be loose.

I also have a noise from under the right side of the engine area closer to the firewall. I have a MRT turboback exhaust. Mechanics have told me it was the downpipe that was rattling. I have my doubts. It sounds like a strut problem. but how do I diagnos this? I hear it over bumps and when going in reverse. Help me find this before I buy a new downpipe and see that the problem isn't remedied. I refuse to use a dealer to help me. The last time they had the car they didn't tighten any hose on the motor after finding an overheating problem and my I/C hose blew off at 19psi. I paid $198.00 to them for a themostat replacement.
dburns@oel.state.nj.us thanks!!!

One of your brake rotor shields may be bent and scraping against the rotor. It was strange when it happened to my car, because the scraping/clicking sound only occurred when when making a turn. I was worried because it sounded like worn CV joints, but it only turned out to be an $8 repair (bending the shields back to normal).
