Default Best way to 4 cyl HP increase?

What's the best way to get an extra 15-20 HP (& some more torque) out of the 2001 Outback w/ a 2.5 4 cyl engine. Cost is a factor, but I am open to all suggestions short of a turbo.

Does anyone make a chip that is less than $600?

I've been comparing this wagon to a VW Passat of the same year (2001.5) Althouth the VW has 170 HP compared to the Subaru's 165 HP, the VW has much more torque available at lower RPM (1800) than the Subaru does and therefore has much better accelleration. Plus, I can chip the VW for under $500 to @ 200 HP.

Overall, I like the Subaru better for its design, reliability, and AWD, but the VW is more peppy and has much better acceleration which is important to me.

Chips are a waste of money. Exhaust, header, lightened crank pulley, CAI..All together will show you what the 2.5 is all about. Brian

Like most naturally aspirated motors, there is no significant bang for the buck upgrade here aside from forced induction. The WRX and the VW 1.8t's give you huge returns for little money, but no such luck with an EJ25 powered car.

All suggestions?

Easy: new rear end gearing.

Anders

(with "rear end" or "final" naturally being somewhat of a misnomer given the drivetrain layout and the two ring/pinions you need to replace.)

Shorter tires would be a cheaper alternative to regearing. Putting Impreza or regular Legacy height tires would increase the gear ratio by 6% (and increase the speedometer and odometer readings by 6%).

Lightened pulley set and, if MT, lighter flywheel.
Also, any weight you can pull off - I've read that losing 11 pounds is like gaining one HP. Do you NEED A/C? Does EVERY window need to be able to be lowered? Do you actually USE the rear and passenger seats? Call a tow truck instead of carrying a spare.

I love Texas! I got a roof scope for my rally car when I was in Amirillo!

No love for Carl? He He.

CAI
Header
Lightened crank pulley
High flow cat section
Cat-back exhaust
Cobb cam(s)
High flow heads

Many ways($$$$$$$) to beef up HP and torque.

It's the AWD sucking it all up driving more than just one or two wheels. Brian

No, AWD kicks ass... end of discussion . Getting absolutely no scratch in first or second gear means you have a better chance of winning

Spin a tire, LOSE A RACE!
