Default Wheelwell discoloring

On my '02 WRX, all the wheelwells' black paint is wearing off, revealling the less-than-attractive silver/gray "undercoating"... I doubt this is normal, and not anything to be concerned about (?)... anyone having the same issue? Results?

And, yes, I did do a search without any luck

If it really bugs you, you can buy rubberized undercoating in a spray can (just like any other spray paint) and re-coat the area. I know 3M sells the undercoating (I have purchased it before for my previous car) - I imagine other companies do as well.

Knowledge of the "solution" is nice, and appreciated, but if this problem is due to shoddy material/workmanship, it seems disappointing that the consumer would have to rectify the problem.

The car is just over 1.5 years old... I could see if it were 5+, but, c'mon...
