Default remote door lock problem

My remote on the keychain often has trouble locking the doors. I have tried both remotes and both have trouble. On one, I replaced the battery and it still has problems. Seems to have poor range as well. Works best near engine bay but if I walk several steps away from the car, it doesn't work consistently.

Can anyone tell me where the door locking module is located so I can inspect it? anyone else have this problem?

On my Outback it's underneath the drivers side dash, near the steering column.

Thanks. Will check it out. Now I'm wondering if I knocked something loose putting in the stereo or radar system or boost gauge.
