Stupid Question

In purchasing tires, which one of these configurations will rub less with STi V5 suspension

225/45WR16
or
225/40WR16

Thee is only a $4.00 difference between them

Which one should I get? Personally I want the 40's because of the looks.. But I'm not going to sacrifice Function over Form this time :P

Thumbs up

They'll be about the same. The 45 series is a better choice, IMHO, for a 16" wheel. You live where the streets are paved with glass? I would like to think that the 40 series would deform the edges of the tread a little more than a 45. I'm telling you, the 45 looks almost square on the wheel. Tread is flat to the ground, and it looks great!

45's will clear the rear fender and shorter than that is just nutty, unless you have your car slammed into the weeds. but at stock ride height, 45's are more than short enough.

Remember, I am running the STi V5 suspension which lowers the car about 3/4 of an inch. So you think 225/45/16 will work perfectly colin? (ps: i usually don't have more than 1 person in my car while taking arik (tyrmeltr) turns

40 series tires are getting close to rubber bands. I wouldn't go past 45. I cracked the sidewall on one of my Kumho 205/50/16.

Thumbs down

Every tire and rim manufacturer doesn't recommend running 225mm wide tire on a 7" wide rim. You need at least 7.5" rim to do that safely. You can run into major problems at high speeds and the tire might also unseal under hard cornering. Why go crazy when 215/50/16 is recommended world wide for our rims.

A 225/40/R16 is going to be 7% smaller than stock, which you will notice in higher rpm at the same speeds.

When I was scrubbing in my 215/45/R16 STS tires (About 5% smaller than stock) I had a lot of fun. The car launches noticeably better and pulls harder. It is also a little annoying on the highway because it adds a couple hundred RPM at higher speeds.

I have a curiosity to see what the 225/40 would be like to drive, but for me I definitely would not want to drive them every day. There is little rim protection there and the speedo error, odo error and mileage penalty are more than I would want for everyday driving. I think 45 series is the better choice of these two.

Wink

Sev, shaddap and buy those 225/45's. Trust me - they rock. Alex has been farming the chronic again. These bad boyz aren't bulging out over the rim, and aren't about to unmount themselves at high speeds. You worry too much. Slap yourself, then spend the $400.
