Default Radar Detector triggers

Just to satisfy some of my curiosities...

Why do those electronic signs that have arrows or letters on the sides of highways (usually interstates) set my radar detector off?
I have a Valentine 1.

Also, when I pass commercial areas a lot of signals get triggered. This is because of microwaves and automatic doors and stuff?

Neon lights also give me a LASER warning on my V1.

Hmmm

The signs are triggering the laser detection, I get that all the time with my V1. It's because the light output from the signs has some infrared content in the same wavelength as used by PD laser. Same thing for neon lights, and you'll find other things that do this as well (such as the third brake lights on newer GM SUVs).
Your guess about the radar false alerts is accurate, they are caused by radar-operated motion sensors for doors and alarms.
If you keep your V1 in full-logic mode it will minmize the false radar alerts but won't eliminate them completely.

The signs appear to use K-band around here to determine when they should display their message (vehicle detection).

It costs a lot of power to run those lights, and the signs are solar/battery powered.

Some of them even have the ability to display vehicle speed. One on the DOE complex where I used to work would even calculate your speeding ticket amount...
