Default What aftermarket Wrx Intercoolers fit in a GC8

Basically looking to see what others have done that have a wrx engine swap in an older 2.5rs gc8. Which ones fit, which ones need modifications and which ones plain suck

I did a search as well but its hard to find the proper way to word it for good results.

Any help is grealty appreciated.

JDM V7 fits right on. USDM you'll need all of the brackets for the intercooler.

The V7 is nice, large and cheapish. I think that the MRT is one of the largest that will fit a GC

Or you could use an intercooler designed specifically for the 2.5RS. I just happen to know of one for sale...

I have seen the APS TMIC unit fitted to a WRX swap, but it did NOT fit in my STI 6 swap. What I am getting to is that you should be careful when someone says "it fits" because it may be dependent on your swap.

Well,
What swap do you have in your car? What fits will be directly related to what generation EJ20 you are using...

Depends on a few factors.
1. which x-member you will use with your swap. IE Turbo Legacy or GD A/B
The Turbo Legacy will lower the engine about 1 inch lower in the engine bay.
That way you can use a TXS TMIC or most large aftermarket ones.
2. Any JDM ver 7/8 will fit under the hood.
3. To use the USDM STI's you need to modify the mounting brackets.

a little history about my car
98 impreza rs
its had a usdm ej205 with a GDA ver7 spec-c front x-member
now it has a full ver7 sti drivetrain swap.

point is ive been through this a few times

I have other friends in the area that have ej20 swaps in theyre RS's and theyre engines sit significantly lower then mine.

*EDIT*
Ive had the same TXS TMIC on both of the engines.

Hey Frank, my question is... If the xmember raises the engine an inch, then the tranny will be raised up in the front since it connects solidly to the engine. Wouldn't this affect the tranny mounts and the shifter linkage? Wouldn't it prevent the 6 speed from fitting in a gc entirely since it's so tight to begin with? Just a few q's,

ok perhaps an inch was too much for me to say.

But the point is. My roommate has a ej20'd GC8 with a turbo leg x-member. his engine seems alot lower then mine.

Seems????? I think we need measurement before yet another rumor gets started here. Some people still swear the GC tunnel needs to be bashed to fit a 6 spd

yeah, u can't trust those low numbers!!

good point about the Xmember dropping the engine. i knopw VSigma told me last year that i would have to e carful searching tmic's cause i was looking at MRT ptoducts, and certain ones would hit the hood on an old school body as opposed to a GD.

i'd luv to fit a Hyperflow TMIC but am prepared to accept a v7.

some food for thought... could there be a difference in height from on set of motor mounts to another set?

The various engine swaps can make the height appear different. The intake manifolds were different on some, correct? So that could adjust where the intercooler sits, in relation to the firewall. It would also affect height, to a degree...possibly making one swap appear to be a different height than another.

To determine it was the crossmember, we'd need to know the car, the crossmember, the specific engine swap(total, block, heads, intake manifold, etc...) and the intercooler used(and if it was modified).

The intake manifold on my Version 8 swap nearly hits the hood when it's closed (via looking inside when I didn't have the headlights/grill on)

I'm using a JDM new age crossmember
