Default AP question?

I searched, and read up on Cobb's Site and still cant get the answer. Does the AP. have a boost controller built in, or work as one depending on the map? Also i am reading that its smart for ALL stage 2 users to have an egt gauge. this is telling me that the AP woulnt read the egt's? and i right?

I have a full turbo back, and want to buy sometime of EM to up the horse's and i really am liking the facts about the AP.

Thanks in advance
Rob

Rob,

Heres my take on your questions....I am sure someone with more technical knowledge will chime in as well. The AP is not a boost controller that you can just set. It does allow you to monitor boost pressure on the AP. The AP allows you to download pre-programmed (parameters are locked as part of the map) maps to your existing ECU. The map modifies sections of the ECU's programming to give you more power (timing, boost, AFR..etc.). Because you are using the stock ECU it will throw CEL's if you go above safe parameters set by Subaru (ie EGT). The maps shut these CEL's off so that your ECU does not throw a CEL and go into a safe mode which will take your power gains away. The maps are on the conservative side, so chances are you will not find dangerous EGT's, they will be higher than stock but not off the charts dangerous. Iif you add mods outside of Cobbs recommendations you could have issues, or if your car is not maintained well you could see issues. Gauges will allow you to monitor important engine parameters and make sure all is well. A boost gauge and EGT are definitely the ones to start with. It's the old ounce of prevention.....

Good Luck

The AP does not have a boost controller built it. It has a boost gauge reader that reads from the solenoid that the ECU reads from.

Depending on the map it has less or more boost. The map has a boost table to go by depending on load. Stg 1 boost map is less than Stg 2 based on flow through a downpipe vs stock downpipe

The AP does not have a EGT guage available in it. EGT guage would be used to reference that the car is not running too hot. Most people that tune would want this gauge or anyone that would want to know thier exhaust gas temps. It is not a requirement though in purchasing an AP

With a full turboback you would be Stage 2. The nice thing about the AP is if you don't know how to tune, then its a great choice for someone wanting EM

Thanks guys for the info.

Just to re-iterate, you saying that boost gauge and egt gauges are something i should look into getting. your also saying that depending on the maps, the boost will change again depending on what map i download. also unless i change more then Cobb knows about, my egt's shouldnt harm the car.

It's not that i dont know how to tune, its just that with subaru's ecu i dont think i wanna take that chance of trying. I dont mind spending the $595 on the AP because i never plan on modding to the point of 300+hp so the Ap should be able to handle my plans.

So how do you guys like the AP?

I love my AP sent it and be done. Smooth transition from OL/CL the car drives so much better than it did stock. Boost will be raised from the Map you download to flash the car.

The boost gauge and EGT guages are not a bad thing to have but not necessary, just helps monitor the cars performace.

If I had to do it again I would still go AP. If later down the road you add a turbo and injectors their is another map you can flash using the AP. And if you want to tune your car specific instead of a off-the-shelf map you can buy Street Tuner which is software that links to the AP so you can modify the maps

Yes, with engine mods should come better than stock instrument line up. A co-requisite if you will. Boost and EGT being 1st and 2nd, oil temp 3rd.

Cobb/AP is great for <stage 2.5, go beyond that and you'll need Street tuner or another EM. Lots of discussion on this on the board right now. Cobb vs ECUteck, Utec, Hydra not like comparing apples and apples. Pears and pinapples more like it. The more you search the more you'll learn too, tons in here..

Just be sure your battery is at full charge when you set the base map...

Might be a good idea to use the external DC cord with the AP just to ensure voltage doesn't go low... I did that and all was well with Stg 1.

As an FYI - Your factory ECU has boost control built in. The Accessport modifies the stock boost control settings, and other things as well (fuel, timing, etc). So, in essence your factory ECU is a boost controller, and the AP does change the boost control settings depending on the map used.
