Default 2005 Subaru Technician World Championship, November 1-7, Tokyo

Subaru Deutschland issued a press release yesterday (see http://www.subaru-presse.de/news2005...ikerWM2005.htm). Here's my not-so-hot translation:
Quote:
The Subaru Mechanic 2005 World Championship
National champions compete in Tokyo for the title

Subaru is looking for the "world champion of Subaru mechanics." National champions will be determined in national preliminaries through August. Then, during November 1-7, 2005, the national champions will compete in Tokyo for the world champion title. Only the best technician from each country will travel to Japan in order to compete in the finals against the rest of the world during the Tokyo Motor Show. Only the best make a "champion" from themselves.

The first "German Subaru Technician Championship" (Deutsche Subaru Techniker Meisterschaft - DSTM) will count as qualification for the world championship . Every qualified Subaru mechanic can take part. During the preliminaries in the theory section, the participants must correctly answer questionnaires with ten questions, each regarding Subaru technology. The ten best mechanics from this theoretical part then participate in the German championship June 12-13 in Friedberg. Once there, the abilities in a vehicle are tested. The mechanics can expect any conceivable problem, from a defective stoplight to a worn clutch to a tricky brake hose. Therefore he may take a repair manual for help during the practical exam. Then the German champion flies to the world championship in Tokyo and, in addition, can take along companion to wish him luck.

In Japan the conditions for the participants from all the countries will be identical. The elimination is hard and only one will win. During the theoretical examination 25 questions regarding Subaru technology are to be answered correctly within one hour. This part counts for 25 per cent of the total. Then follows a two-hour practical portion in which the mechanics must diagnose and repair a prepared Forester and Impreza (2006 models). The winner will travel home with the title "world champion."
I wonder if SOA will hold a US championship. I think they should.

They hold a US championship every year, Jon.

Being the ultimate repository of Subaru knowledge, I thought you would have been aware.

Why do they keep it a secret and not publicize it, like SCI has done in Canada? Is SOA somehow embarrassed?

Who was the winner last year and where did he/she work?

Has anyone heard about a world-wide competion during the Tokyo Auto Show before?

Subaru Canada, Inc (SCI) is getting ready to hold their technician national championship. From http://www.subaru.ca/interface/Subar...&WebSiteID=282:
Quote:
SUBARU TECHNICIANS COMPETE FOR TITLE OF MASTER TECHNICIAN

June 8, 2005

CONTACT: Elaine Griffin (905) 568-4959

Subaru Canada, Inc. (SCI) today announced that 12 technicians from five Subaru regions will compete for the title of 2005 Master Technician on Saturday, July 25th. This will be the first competition held in the new Technical Training Centre at SCI's new corporate headquarters in Mississauga, Ontario.

Vying for this year's Master Technician title are:

British Columbia
Chris Grewcutt - Docksteader's Subaru
Scott Forsyth - Hilltop Subaru

The Prairies
George Harkin - Subaru of Saskatoon
Eric McDonald - Centaur Subaru

Ontario
Jay Mistry - Willowdale Subaru
Sean McClinchy - Gemini Subaru
Kevin Cote - Subaru of Mississauga Inc.

Québec
Pierre Levesque - Grand Portage Subaru
Patrice Dessureault - Option Subaru
Roch Boucher - Victoriaville Subaru

The Maritimes
Peter Goguen - Dexter's Subaru Halifax
Jeff Rose - Dexter's Subaru Dartmouth

These technicians earned the right to attend the final competition by receiving top marks on a series of six written exams. They then advanced to the finals, a "hands-on" competition in which they will compete in diagnosing and correcting identical malfunctions deliberately installed on identical vehicles. The pre-installed faults could include difficulties with starting, charging, ignition, fuel and emission control system, engine management systems, brakes, electrical systems, and HVAC.

"The written tests are an important first step in establishing who might have the right to claim Master Technician status," said Norio Osakabe, president, chairman and CEO of Subaru Canada. "But the true test comes during the half-day trouble-shooting competition in which the contestants must repair a series of real problems on a real car within a limited time. It's the kind of real-life challenge the technicians face every day in the dealership."

In addition to the contestants' success in finding and repairing the problems in the allotted time, the judges award points based on the technicians' workmanship, speed, accuracy, neatness, and safety practices.

The 2005 Subaru Master Technician competition will take place at Subaru Canada headquarters, 560 Suffolk Court, Mississauga (905-568-8068) on Saturday, June 25th, beginning at 9:00 am. Interested media are invited to attend - please contact Michelle Bogle (ext. 255) in Public Relations, for more information.
Please note that the press release bungled the date in the first sentence (and got it right in the last sentence). The championship will happen on Saturdary, June 25th..

I wonder whether we'll ever hear anything about the mythical US technician championship.
