Default exhaust idea

I have a 04 2.5rs and I have a friend with a 02 wrx, now he is getting a new exhaust for his car. I am going to take his mid pipe and muffler and put it on mine, has anyone tried this? i figure it will work good cause the wrx exhaust is 2 1/4 and from what i have researches anything bigger then that would just make the n/a engine loose power and its a lot cheaper then spening it on another aftermarket brand. So yea has anyone tried it and what are your opinions?

Alright I have done this EXACT thing. First off, the wrx midpipe is too short to bolt on and the flange doesn't fit on our cars. So what I did was cut the WRX midpipe just shy of the flange before the bend. Cut the stock RS midpipe just after the flange. Add about a 14 inch section of 2.25" pipe to the modified WRX pipe and then take the stock RS flange that was just cut off and weld them all together. In all very simple. Then the WRX axle back just bolts up to your new custom midpipe. It cost me $60 in all.

AS for performance, well it is a little louder but has a little whistle sound when you turn it off. If you can live with that it is all good. The car felt stronger after the exhaust was put on and it looks stock. I just went thru DEQ with it and they didn't even look at it Score for mods

you cold always just have a custom 2.25 inch midpipe created and then just use the wrx axleback. THat is what most people do. It seems like alot of work hacking the two pipes, rotating flanges etc.

Don't waste your time with the wrx midpipe. It is more trouble than its worth. Get a custom midpipe made with a resonator. You can use the wrx axle-back section, but they sound annoyingly buzzy on an RS. I'd have a custom catback made, but it's your call.

Bumpity Bump Bump

Would it be cheaper to get a mid-pipe made without a resonator. My friend told me to get them to remove the resonator (and i agree) but it might be less trouble to just get the pipe made

Umm yeah..That wasn't the question. But feel free to be a moron.

I figured it would be cheaper to just take a pipe, bend it, and weld on flanges. Than take the old mid-pipe, cut out the resonator. Add 14 inches of pipe. Cut off the flange and re-weld it on rotated 90 degrees...

If you got a custom mid pipe with out a resonator they would likely just take some piping of your desired diameter and crush bend it accordingly and weld on some flanges. Obviously adding a resonator to that would require more work (cutting and welding) and a resonator (which isnt exactly free).

mmm, it's not really a hassle. The exhaust shop will know what to do if you tell them you want it to fit on the RS. And tell them to take off the resonator...it's not gonna cost you that much more. Worked fine for me.

Ok, i got the WRX cat-back installed today. The modifications to the midpipe were different than what i found on this forum. Could be because my 98 is alot different than a 02+ RS. Anyway, resonator removed. Car is not that much louder than stock, i mean, its definitely noticable (and the twin tip looks alot better) But i was expecting it to be louder, perhaps i need some Borla headers. What i really wanted was to hear the boxer growl but i'm not getting any of that.

Ohh and without the resonator its not raspy at all. Just a more louder, deep sound..

Heh, I was in the same boat u r in. I had a WRX axleback with a custom unresonated midpipe and it wasn't what I expected either (sound- or performance-wise). One set of headers and a cat later and... Well, I don't listen to my stereo anymore cuz i can't get enough of that boxer rumble!
