Default Deciding on gauges

I had no idea gauges were so expensive.

So with my motor swap I figure a Boost gauge is almost an absolute must have.

I'm not sure what else is important. I only really want to add 3 gauges. I don't want my car to look like an airplane cockpit.

What really is the benefit of the fuel pressure, or oil, EGT? I figure a nice voltmeter would be nice. It is one gauge I would have really liked when my Alternator died.

If you had to choose 3 gauges, which would you go with?

Thanks

A voltmeter and oil temperature guage are two of the most important guages you can add. For the third, I'm not sure. What I'd probably do is add either an engine manifold pressure or boost guage (depending on if it's an N/A or turbo motor). Not quite as useful as the first two, but I'm the kind of person that likes to know what exactly is going on with my car at all times.

It really depends on what direction you want to go regarding engine monitoring and management. For example, performance monitoring requires a different set of gauges as opposed to engine health monitoring. A whole slew of sensor data is available at the ECU which can pulled via any OBD-II reader (or feature-rich engine management system) when necessary. This helps if you want to get some static values to aid in troubleshooting or with a project, etc. So the more likely question is, what type of monitoring do you need to perform while sitting in the drivers seat underway(?).

If performance monitoring of a turbo motor setup is your objective, then my opinion is as follows:
  1. Boost Gauge: Absolutely most important. Allows the driver to constantly monitor boost values for optimal boost.
  2. EGT (Exhaust Gas Temperature): Essential for tuning and properly monitored can allow the driver to save a motor if things go wrong under high RPM.
  3. AFR-WB (Wideband Air/Fuel Ratio): Again, essential for proper performance monitoring. Allows the driver and tuner to push the motor to the edge without going over. Alerts driver to dangerously lean conditions.
The more important question here is where are you going to mount the gauges you choose to go with? The Legacy interior and dash is not the most gauge friendly setup Subaru came out with…

Well I guess I was looking toward motor health, but now you mention it, I probably do need some other gauges for performance tuning.

I was going to probably do a 3 gauge on the A pillar. I also thought of maybe buying the center console mount meant for the WRX and mounting it in top of the dash.

The middle console where the stereo is, in my opinion, just not a great spot. Hard to see.

You can actually move the HVAC unit down to one of your stereo dins are and get some ABS plastic and put it where the HVAC was and place gauges in there RiosubaGT did that in his car and it looks really good, he put two gauges there.

I'm getting ready to put two gauges in and im deciding on either the a-pillar or dash where i described if you PM him im sure he would be happy to show some pics, you can try and do a search too
