Question Dumb question about strut compatibility...

If the KYB AGX struts for the Impreza do indeed fit 95-99 Legacy's, then could it be possible that the FHI v.5 struts (the pink STi ones) fit also?

I'm just curious, because I've seen then for so cheap at subaruparts.com, and I really don't need (or want to spend money on) an adjustable strut.

The only thing that worries me is that the struts might not be valved right for the weight of our cars... Is this valid? Of course, do they even fit?

I think they would fit (for the same reason you think they would fit). Of course, I have no experience or data to back that up. I also think, like you do, that they probably would not be the best choice for our cars, being 300# heavier and all. That's a pretty big difference, and would probably significantly affect the tuning of the struts.

You might try shooting an email to Rallispec or maybe SPD - they have experience with suspension tuning and probably could tell you whether they would fit, and whether they would work well.

I'd think the same thing as well but you'd be wise to call and check.

Patrick, how are the repairs coming?

I think one reason the KYB's fit is that they ARE adjustable...

I would definately call to check on the others... just to be sure... hell... i had to call KYB to get the part number/impreza thing sorted out... it's the only way to be sure...

Patrick- I'm waiting to hear back from Trey Cobb, thanks...

Subie Gal- The only part of the AGX that is adjustable are the internals, I think...

Thanks for the replies! I might just have to buck down and get some AGX's, unless I can find GR2's for cheap. Anyone know if Summit is selling those as well as the AGX's?

Velocity, We were working the thread a couple of weeks ago on a source for cheap AGX and apparently we can get them through JC whitney for 329. Not only that but there is a coupon # for 10% off that. Search back for more info on cheap agx in the classified if you want to track it down. Please share the info if you find anything out.

hey, i know nothing about suspension, but isn't it the SPRING that is weight-critical since the spring rate is designed based on the load on the spring whereas the strut's function is just to dampen the spring? So as long as you have the right spring, then the rate that it vibrates is the close to the same as for the lighter car (i.e. the Eibach Imprezza spring & Eibach Legacy springs are designed for the different weights of the 2 cars, but yield similar rides), and the dampening needed would be the same. Ok, clearly I'm talkin' outta my ass here

springs do seem to be different for Legacy vs Impreza... H&R has 2 totally different part #'s for this item... and yes, it is the spring rate which is affected due to the weight differences....

KYB/AGX if you DO decide to order from Summit Racing for your Legacy... tell them you have an Impreza or they will um... *argue* with you... no matter what you say... just an fyi - just tell 'em it's an RS you're buying them for...

Gumball - I may be wrong, but look at it this way (and I'm just making up the numbers here): Let's say the STi struts are designed to damp the vibration of a 275#/in spring on a 2800# car. Now you put those same struts on a 3200# car with, say, 325#/in springs - that's going to put a significantly different load on the strut. So I think the struts are also affected by weight.

I think the reason the Impreza AGX struts will work on the Legacy is, as pointed out above, they are adjustable.

Duh, I completely screwed that one up... I thought Subie Gal was talking about the strut itself being adjustable to fit the Legacy's, perhaps because the mechanicals were a little different. But she really *was* talking about the internals the whole time. Whoops.

Anyhow, that brings me to another question- does the extra weight make any of the settings on the AGX useless?

I don't think that the weight is really the issue, but, rather, whether the strut is a good match for the stiffer springs -- general word is that it is... My concern remains in whether we'd be killing the struts by having them in a more compressed state over stock (if the springs are shorter, the strut will be more compressed. Squished if you will. ) all the time.

Anyway, the settings would only be rendered useless if the springs were so stiff that the strut would be taken out of the equation. Bounce bounce bounce...
