Default Drivetrain or Suspension Problem??

Okay I have a 5-speed MT in a 99 Legacy. I had a horrible clicking/clunking sound when pulling into a parking space. Basically with the wheel turned left or right there is a bad sound either in the suspension or the transmission. I figured it was just my CV joints and decided to replace the axels since I had 116k miles on the vehicle. But nope didn't fix the problem. Does anyone have any suggestions what this might be? I have looked at everything in the suspension components while I had the car on the lift but I ddin't notice anything. Any suggestions would be helpful before I go to the dealer. I usually like to fix these things myself.

might be your lower control arm bushings are busted

Or is your car lowered?
If so, mine was making a grating clunking noise whenever I turned into a parking space.
It turned out to be that the top spring perch was not aligned properly with the bottom perch that resulted in the noise...

Completely stock car. I am really thinking that the problem is in the center diff which is inside the transmission on my 5-speed MT.

How many miles? It might be a worn strut bearing? Had that issue with my previous car.

Up front the strut top mounts have a bearing plate. I believe this is what he is referring to.

Did it start after you had the axles replaced? If so it is probably a ball joint. The mechanic or yourself would have needed to seperate the ball joint from the control arm to get the axle out. It could have gotten damaged in the process. However broken ball joints don't normally show their faces until you get going a little faster. With that you would feel a lot of steering wheel shake and front end vibration. As well as some pretty good clunking as you turn while at speed.

Another area to look at are the wheel bearings up front. If they blow out you can get symptoms anywhere from a slight chirping squeek at lower speeds to a full on rhythmic grind.

Take it to a Tires Plus if you have one in your area. They do diagnostic and appraisals for $20.
