Question Swaybar Q

Hi All-

got my front tower brace on last ight, which is a nice, subtle addition to the GT's handling at speed. I was getting ready to bolt the 18mm sway bar up, but....

I did a little exit ramp tooling around this morning and found that the rear end is willing to step out and curtail any push with with a little throttle lift. I am now worried that an 18mm bar is going to be a bit much for the otherwise stock suspension, and that I may end up with a snap oversteer-prone set up if I do. Anyone out there with track experience in their car care to weigh in with an opinion?

Wow, I would have thought 18 be a bit soft.
I run my adjustable at no softer than 22. But I also have GAB's and a whole lot of other crap. Upgrade your struts and springs. Then see how the rear end stays. By the way, you aren't still running stock tires? That should be your first upgrade.

I just put on my new adjustable sway bar and I have it set at 19mm with otherwise stock suspension. Last night I was playing and got into a nice slide where my rear was coming around slightly faster than my front. Because of the road I also had to brake as I was sliding through the exit of the corner. I did have to counter steer just a little bit so keep things resonably straight but the car was also very much in control. If you are confident in you driving skills or don't push the car at all then the 18mm should be fine. Personally, I loved the control I had last night. Hope this helps.

What's the stock swaybar in the rear. On my OB it's 18mm. I've got a little bit of understeer.

i think it's 15 mm on the legacy gt. i couldn't get the car to do anything but push with the front strut tower bar and stock suspension and sway bar. i was also running dunlop sp 5000's in stock size. might the tires be the key?

I can't imagine an 18 upsetting the balance; I've got crappy tires on my OB< but it's pretty balanced, and will only step out when *I* want it to.........

We have bigger swaybars than most on our cars, and found that the best way of making the car's rear more consistent was changing the rear swaybar links.

Having said that, none of us are in an OB (they did wonders on my old BG5) - all sedans, so I can't vouch that such links are avail for your car (surely someone's got them though).

The swaybar links are identical between the OB and other Legacys of the same body styles. Same with sway bars (other than size).

We have an 18mm bar on my wife's GT. She's not a performance driver by any means, but has not had any problems with the car oversteering. The ride's a bit harsher, and the car tramlines a bit more, but that's to be expected - the stiffer the swaybar, the less independent your suspension is. I think you'd be perfectly safe putting an 18mm on there.

The rear end shouldn't want to step out at all with the stock rear sway bar on there. Dropping the throttle mid-corner should get the car to tuck in a little bit, but not actually transition to oversteer. If you're actually getting the rear to come around, I'd check your alignment - make sure your rear toe is at zero. A little toe out in the rear will make the rear more willing to come around - I used to run a bit of toe out for auto-x.

With both of my GTs, the stock suspension + 18mm bar was very nice. On my '97, stock suspension + 18mm bar + Kartboy endlink bushings + Powerflex rear sway bar bushings = absolutely perfect balance. The car would still push if I got on the gas too hard in low speed corners (ie trying to accelerate too hard at an auto-x), but at speed the car was wonderfully neutral.

So, make sure your alignment is good, and go for the 18mm. You should be fine.

Thanks all, especially Pat. Yea, she just tucks in real nice right now, but it sounds like 18mm with a set of links and bushing will be a nice upgrade, low cost too. I have an 18mm bar lying around already, off my Outback (went to the whiteline there, the OB is set up as well as an OB can be now).

Ok so, free 18mm bar, $100 or less for links, $30 for the bushings, that leaves room for....

TIRES!!!!!! GET THESE DAMNED RE92s OFF! What do you all suggest? the Kumho? this car will see snow maybe 3x a year, avg. 3-6", with th occasional baltimore "blizzard" of 8"
