Are there radar guns/detectors that can tell how fast a car in front of you is moving?
How long does it take to work. If you see a cop on the side of the road, once you see him, if you slow down, is it a lost cause, Does he already have you tagged/pegged/scanned? What are the rules when you get pulled over? Is the cop suppose to be yelling/angry? Does he have the right to be rude? Do I have to deal with it, listen to it? Story: I went to the Tai New Years Festival with Wife and a friend. Afterwards we ended up driving to McDonnalds and getting food. On the way back to our house to eat the food, I am turning left at a stop light that just turned yellow. I speed up a little, slow down for the corner, make the light without red... Now i'm on the onramp... and there is a truck, or SUV or something RIGHT on my a$$... I mention to my wife and friend that This guy is right behind me....I drop it a few gears and get moving, thinking I might have just cut him off. Once i'm on the Highway, I slow down a little (I couldn't have been going THAT fast...) put it into 6th gear, and set the cruise control... He comes back up RIGHT on my a$$.. i mention outloud hes back on me again.. So I dropped it to 4rth, and i'm thinking, should I gun it, or just slow down suddently and do a brake check? I decided i'm going to slow down, so i'm about to take my foot off that gas, as his Lights turn on, and he pulls me over......... He walks up to me, rudely asks, Officer:Whats the speed limit? Rack: 65 Officer o you know how fast you were going?Rack: no Officer: Can you tell me why you were going over 100MPH? Rack:You came up on my fast, and I thought you were going to hit me, so I sped up. Officer:That no excuse, you could have pulled over to the side. Rack:yes sir. (nicely) Officer:Why did you speed up, you knew I was a cop. Rack:I didn't know you were a cop. Officer: You could see me coming down huffman. (Facing me, all I could see were his headlights, could have been any SUV/Truck) Officer: Let me see you Drivers Licence, Proof of Insurance, And Registration.. Rack: (after fumbling around for a while looking for my reg...)Can you give me a bit to look for it. Rack:Here you go.... Officer: Do you know how much a 100MPH Ticket costs? Rack: No. Officer: I'll be right back. Rack starts talking with wife and friend about how confused I am)Officer: A 100Mph ticket, for that little exceleration stunt you pulled would have cost you $300, and 10 points off your licence, leaving you with 2 points for the rest of the year. If you had been going that fast, and a moose came out in front of you, She woudl be dead, he would be dead, and you woudl be dead... (he goes on to explain how much damage a moose could do to my car). Rack:Yes sir. Officer: Ok, you need to slow down, have a nice day. ........ I honestly do not think I was going much past 70, if is was at all, I didn't really look, but I wasn't driving around looking for trouble that night, I was on the way home to eat. |

Anchorage cops are asses, all of em I've met anyway.
Especially the out of state recruits. When I get a full rear view I slow down ten under and they either hit or pass. Look for the X's, Y's in the plates and little antennas. He was baiting you for a reaction plain and simple. Again cops are asses;the hole part. They use laser guns. So yeah they pretty much get you from the speed traps. He was simply pacing you. He never saw 100 in his suv be the time you were slowed down again. The warning was the right call. As he seemed to have caused all your problems in the frst place. Bottom line .... How fast were you going? If you didn't get a ticket, why the heartburn? When I was in high school, I took these two girls to this dance. On the way home, I was driving slowly and the girls said I needed to make this right turn. I barely made the turn and the cop that was behind me (till then, I didn't know he was there) and turned on his lights. He came to my window and said that "I was weaving down the road" but after looking at the 2 nice ladies, he said, "But I can see why." He checked my license and let me continue on without a ticket. Don't know if I got much more of a warning, except to pay better attention to the road. |

I dunno, just kinda bugged me.
Ive been pulled over before, once while giving a friend a ride home, I didn't make a 0 motion stop (complete stop) at a red light, before turning right. Second was for speeding on Min, of which I was going within speed limits for that road, but it was a few years back when they posted "road construction" signs for the entire summer, even though they did NO work... This time was the only time the cop has been rude. I pulled over right away, turned off the engine, rolled down the window, and had my hands on the steering wheel. Couldn't have been a better stop for the cop, other then me having issues finding Registration in my messy glove box. Your right, I need to just forget it, and be happy i didn't get a ticket. I dwell to much =) |

Maybe the borderline rudeness and "death of family and friends" story was meant sincerely to help you think about the situation? I wasn't there, but if he really didn't like you or wanted to inconvenience you, all he would have to do, is smile politely and drop a big ticket in your hand. I would much rather have a lecture. Just my .02 |

go to court and say that cop intended to issue me a ticket.
caps can't do any action like what you discribed to issue a ticket it's against the law.. I am for sure.. I win one because cop cut me off right before light and gave me ticket for running red light.. and I went to court and said he cut me off right before the light and I had no choice.. and judge asked cop why he did it so.. and cop said because he was driving too fast.. and ofcourse that doesnt make any sense.. so judge gave his hand on me.. said officer made it on purpose to give him a ticket.. dismissed...!! lol!! and right after cop gets out of the court he threw his paper to trash and looked me with stinky eyes while I am smiling.. |

I can't speak for that cop specifically, but I know alot of the time they ride your ass to run your plate. If he really was continually tailgating you then he was also in the wrong, but there was no need for you to speed up like that. I would and do just slow down and make them go around. Lasers are used when parked, like on the side of the road. There is a radar unit mounted in the front & the back, if he was behind you, he just needs to be going 10 mph or more slower than you to get an accurate reading. Some cops are rude, because some people are rude, at least you just got a warning. And just for info, I know everyone loves to make the "quota" remarks, but there is no such thing. |

Second, it depends on which department it is, and what shift they're on. Some have plenty to do just going to different calls, but if they are on graveshift and have nothing else to do, their sgt is probably gonna tell them they should be doing more traffic. There certainly isn't any special number they need. Some officers don't like doing traffic stuff, and don't write hardly any tickets at all. Last edited by SleeperLGT; 04-30-2006 at 11:56 PM. |

Usually, you're being clocked b4 you even see the cop. I've had my beltronics for about half a year and... um.. well, honestly, i have yet to really be tagged by LASER. I see a lot of K,Ka,and X band at the stoplights (apparently those are for emergency vehicles to open up traffic).
Every cop I've passed here does NOT have their radar on. I've been tailed multiple times, but i give a thumbs up to all of them as they pass me b/c i'm driving too slow for their fancy. I got my plates, I've got no tint, and... I drive laid back, most of the time. But if you pass a cop, here it seems, they aren't rollin' with their radars on, if you look like your goin' fast, make sure they have proof that they caught you at that speed. I've been here since January, runnin' radar since Feb... maybe I'm just lucky. Even if they don't get you on radar, they'll give you careless/wreckless driving if you're doing something... When cops are on the side of the road, or in the median just parked, they use a handheld laser which is even more accurate. If they don't get an actual speed, they can write you for basic speed, or too fast for conditions. |

Radar detector is useful.. it's useless if you are only one car on the road.. but if there are any cars in front of you and cop pushese he button to the other.. than you will know..that there is a cop.

Well off the subject of detectors, I do not normally speed much. I tend to Accelerate UPTO the speed limit pretty fast, but I almost always stop there. Even while driving around following people, other subaru drivers, I tend to get lost behing them, cause i'm too affraid to Speed.
But yes I do understand he could have done more then Harshly warn me. I'm just saying that I really don't think I was speeding if at all, and that it seemed odd that he came up to the car rude. I did have a slight suspision that maybe something had happened in the area, because he asked where I was comming from, and why I sped away from him so fast, as If I was running from him once I saw him. I Know I was not going over 100 I doubt I was going over 90 I MIGHT have been over 80 I think I was really closer to 70's Not disagreeing with other comments, Oviously a ticket is the worst case, and I didn't get one, so I shouldn't think about it, I just figured i'd ask. And realized with out a story, or explanation It might be hard to understand why/what I was asking. |

A cop can act however he wants. You have to listen to it. As long as he isn't physically hurting you. Yes you have to deal with it and listen to it, he has the state/city/federal government backing him up. You can always file a report with the PD about this officers conduct, but would probably not get very far. Glad you didn't get a ticket Slow down! |

This reminds me of the movie Dirty with Cuba Gooding. Well it really doesn't but I did think about it. The part where they pulled over the Acura.
