Suggestions to SOA: Ref. Future Models
As part of the excitement and evolvement of Subaru's next generation models, I have taken the liberty to point the News & Rumors forum to something more benefiting for us and SOA. Because of your dedication and loyalty to the Subaru brand and this community, this thread would be helpful to express your interests, suggestions, ideas and comments to SOA, which can help/aid them to evaluate what means most to the consumer.
Alot of people here in NASIOC are very knowledgable and want to see Subaru grow, which in turn have expressed some valuable point of views. Well, this is an opportunity to reflect these sentiments to SOA. As Subaru enthusiasts (the consumer), it is imperative that your posts are to be addressed accordingly and not to take advantage and give SOA a "piece of your mind".
As always, the rules of NASIOC still apply and even more so since this thread is being addressed mainly to SOA. So, put your thinking caps on, be professional about it and have fun

Less understeer on the STI's stock. It bugs me to to hear them say how much understeer their is compared to an Evo. Suspension can always be adjusted. But you catch my point.

I believe there are a few areas that Subaru can benefit, one is the small city-car class, which includes the Yaris, Fit, and similar models. It would have to be hip, maneuverable, and similar in proportion to these, while well contented as these others are. This class of smaller efficient cars may take off, a vehicle would need to be in this class that is quickly growing in popularity, especially for the younger age group including college kids. Perhaps the rumored joint venture with Toyota on a small model is driving at this market.
In the performance market, I believe there is a position awaiting to be filled. As you can see below, strictly within the Subaru market, you can have performance or features and quality, but not truly the best of both.
I believe the Spec B falls short of the pinnacle machine. It lacks the ultimate power delivery, braking capability, and the pull around corners that the Impreza STI has. It does however offer superior levels of refinement in materials, NVH, and suspension dynamics as well as features. A Legacy STI resides in a little-touched class, one that offers the performance and near quality levels of BMW M and Audi S/RS models, but at about 2/3 the price, while featuring a more reliable, efficient, and lighter package; it is something the average person may actually be able to attain in the $35-37k ballpark. I believe that although Mazda has been present in this market and Acura is apparently entering this market with their next TSX model due for 2008 with a turbo 4-cylinder, Subaru could easily complete execution and blow the doors off everything in this market and wake up a lot of much higher esteemed cars. Much of the engineering work already appears to be completed with the large parts bin available. Take advantage of the SI-drive and it's multi-personality capabilities to be able to incur better safety margins and economy for Intelligent mode, while able to shift greater than 50% of power to the aft in favor of a more nimble vehicle. Much capabilities lie withing the system.
Technology and efficiency are also becoming much more hotbed topics and especially with AWD as a standard feature on all models,efficiency is a hot topic. I believe it may be crucial to Subaru's success to adopt a more fuel-efficient strategy including but not limited to:
-Direct injection and the capability to run both premium and E85 on higher compression (dynamic and static) engines for greater efficiency, E85 is less efficient on lower compression motors thus I suggest it to be used as dual-fuels for premium-based engines where less efficiency losses are likely to be seen
-Utilizing hybrid technologies much based on capacitor systems to aid in acceleration and city driving where the greatest amount of energy is used, while also being safer for safety and emergency personnel as it is able to quickly discharge perhaps in the case of an airbag deployment or detected crash.
These are just a few of the areas I believe Subaru could benefit. Aiding to efficiency increases, I would be very interested in seeing new technologies and materials that aid in reducing vehicle weight, cost, and complexity while retaining the safety margins.
I believe the Legacy could gain up to 2" in overall length, though it would be nice to see the axles moved closer to the ends, as this does increase departure and approach angles, though the slope angles in the center will decrease. Finding ways to better utilize internal space is important as there appears to be quite a few complaints in the rear legroom area.
Thank you Subaru for allowing us to voice our input. I understand we won't be able to succeed and get special and more performance models until you are able to achieve your goals.

For the 2008 Forester:
Please bring over the turbo Cross Sports. The one without the cross bars, leather, power seats, cold weather package, fogs, etc.. Oh, and please offer it with VDC, at least in the auto version.
For the 2008 Impreza STI:
Please give us a 5-door and make those expensive BBS wheels optional. And how about a double wishbone rear suspension instead of the clunky one we get now?
For the 2008 Impreza and WRX:
Please give us the Navigation system option (and don't make us buy an automatic to get it).
For the 2008 Tribeca:
Please give us a bigger displacement 6-cyl (3.6L would be good) that can run on regular gas.

R1e, R1e, R1e... ASAP, and just sell it at urban dealerships with a hip marketing campaign. You've got the "granola" green consumers, make the growing urban "green" crowd love you even more.
Be daring. Congrats for trying the airplane grille - worked on everything but B9 Tribeca.
Thanks for your impressive efforts for safety - people are starting to take notice. Continue your progress.
Panoramic moonroof in B9 Tribeca.
Use the B11S's panoramic pop-up roof somewhere - how cool!
Full-size minivan or bigger B9 Tribeca - something five or six people can take a vacation in.
Follow through on some concepts - B11S and B9 Scramber would've been wonderful with a few minor tweaks.
B9 Tribeca-based sedan.
Manual transmissions in turbo Legacy wagons.
More differentiation between models.
Minimum 5EAT and disable-able VDC throughout.
Spanish navigation option (if that hasn't been fixed yet).
WOW won't impress audio aficionados - partner with a high-end name (McIntosh? Toyota's JBL partnership?)

-Will second the request for the R1, R2, Stella place in the lineup to be filled, and agree that it needs a 'chic' marketing approach (i.e. Scion).
-Please use regular red and amber taillights, make chrome-base "altezza"-style lamps options.
-Manual transmission in Legagy 2.5GT wagon models. Would have bought one, but no manual pushed me toward 2.5i and we bought it.
-Please bring Forester Cross-sport to US along with Forester STi. I will purchase the more powerful of the lineup (now XT) in model year 2009, preferably FSTi.
-Please restore a green paint color similar to the Acadia Green that was used on the 1998 Impreza 2.5RS (US) to the Impreza/Forester lineup. The paint color options are too narrow. The existing colors have not seen any change or expanding in quite some time. A yellow such as Sonic Yellow or Blaze Yellow would also likely go over well.

Another vote to bring back the MT LGT wagon. My next car may not be a Subaru because this model is no longer available.
Related to the above, don't make performance models like the STI and Spec-B sedan-only. I need a wagon for practicality so I will never buy these cars unless they come as a wagon (folding rear seats are nice but not enough).
Also, another vote for more fuel-efficiency. Diesel Outback and/or Forester would be huge hits with the outdoorsy crowd. I have less enthusiasm for hybrids; they work best as city cars and a nonhybrid FWD minicar would probably compete better in that market than a hybrid AWD Impreza.
Brighter colors would be nice--yellow again or at least a brighter red.
I would NOT want a car with "One Touch Up and Down for all windows." Its a safety hazard for kids.

Bring back the manual transmission Legacy Turbo Wagon.
Please offer sporty trim levels (SpecB and STi) as wagons.
Please don't limit colors and interior options as much (ie one can only get Taupe interior with a White exterior) I bought a 2005 Legacy GT wagon with a white exterior and a black interior with a manual transmission. I would NOT have purchased a Subaru had I not been able to get that combination.

Also, been asking for a harder core STi for years. RA Spec C type with more of the go fast goodies standard and the luxury items optional.
The TR WRX is a slight variation on this theme but an STi version would be best.

HID options, perhaps bi-xenon.
More rear passenger legroom for the Legacy and Impreza.
Might I suggest paint that does not chip so easily? Better quality as well as more color options.
Adjustable pedal positions to accommodate those with larger or smaller sized feet, shoes, boots, etc.
Power-folding side mirrors.
Navigation option for all models and trim levels, regardless of transmission type. Also, something similar to OnStar. ( I was a little hesitant to post that as I fear the black box controversy).
A sport coupe is highly desired, not to mention an STi Forester & Legacy. H6 Turbo? I feel that the top end models should also be available as a wagon.
Everything that was mentioned in the previous posts would be nice too.

I'll come back to Subaru as soon as they build the car I described above and price it for $35k-$38k. We've only been asking since 2004.

As others have said: lose the 4EAT. The gears are spaced too far apart. Isn't it only the normally-aspirated engines that get the 4EAT? And those are the ones that need the 5EAT the most! Eliminating the 4EAT would simplify the production line too.
Bring the R1e - I think it would sell really well here. I like the styling of the R1 much better than the R2, though the R2 is not unattractive.
Bring the P2 as the next Impreza (though I won't be buying one, I'm holding out for a Legacy STI). It has the aggressive looks needed for the Impreza. I'm sure it would be toned down some for production, but it's a sharp looking car.
Bring the Legacy 3.0R (though I hear it may already be coming).
Bring the Legacy STI with H6 turbo. I don't think the H4 turbo is enough for a real STI Legacy, unless you boost the displacement. The American market already has a lot of large-displacement, high-powered vehicles, and the H4 turbo just can't keep up (unless highly modded), so we need a production engine that has the power to run with the big dogs!

Why turn the sexiest sport wagon you or anyone else makes into econo-geezer-mobile by not offering a MT? Seriously, I'll be buying a USED 2005 legacy GT in the future b/c I won't live with the auto only on the new GT wagons. Sorry for the rant.
Agreed: small entry car would be awesome, but I don't know enough about the market to know if a sporty looking R1 would sell here or not.
Agreed: more rear leg room in the impreza based models. The legacy will be our only option for a new subaru b/c the imprezas don't have enough room for child seats in the rear (seriously, a rear-facing baby seat puts the drivers seat on my forester closer to the steering wheel than even I prefer with my short legs). Actually, though, our 95 legacy had MORE leg room in the rear than newer legacys. You actually LOST room?
Agreed: less understeer. This makes it feel like a FWD, not an AWD road gripper.
Agreed: your safety record is IMPORTANT. I LOVE the fact I can feel safe about my kids in a Subaru.
RELIABILITY is vitally important. That's the one thing that makes me recommend a car to someone, like the way I keep recommending Subarus to people I know.
Don't know if this is still an issue, but split-folding rear seats should be standard on everything. Why make anything else?
LSD as an option on any model (you really need one in a snowy area).
The Legacy STI is HOT, but I don't know if I'd ever be able to afford one, so why should my opinion count? But the Legacy GT Wagon is SO sexy! Much more so than the sedan. Just a styling preference.
And of course, give us the moon but keep pricing down

Just a reminder to some posting requests for the Prodrive P2: it is not a Subaru. It uses Subaru parts and components, but could never be produced as a US market car due to its frontal crash characteristics, and mid-engine layout, and that it was built by another company, among other things. We can request for certain aspects of its styling, however.

This year I finally decided to treat myself and get the road-legal rally car I had been wanting for years. Both the wife and I have good jobs, and mine offers me a car to use as a daily driver, so I could go all out and get something based purely on performance.
Surprisingly though, when I started looking at both the STI, as well as it's competition, I found that the best performance car in this category wasn't the STI at all, but the Evo.
It was lighter, had better road feel, better steering, more supportive seats, took to modification exceedingly well, and to top it all off, the new IX models were even faster, with more power than the STI (no matter what the brochures would have you believe).
Basically, it was much closer to it's Japanese counterparts than the Subaru.
I wanted to buy a Subaru, had wanted it for years, but the fact of the matter is that the Evo is a better car if you're looking for all-out performance.
If, however, the STI had a more "hardcore" version available, akin to the Spec-C RA, or even something like the S204, I'd be in a Subaru right now.
So please, please consider doing this for the next Impreza lineup you bring over here. There's no reason why the rest of the world should get the options of purchasing all-out performance versions of the STI, while the only option we're given is getting one with leather and a sunroof.

Make the impreza's with more rear leg room, get rid of hood scoops. mount intercoolers on front. make the rear wing more stable. and make the car wider. Better seats, and leather as an option for STi. I think thats it.
Oh yeah, and better paint for all models.

I want a Hatchback 08 Impreza with the 2.0R motor. 30mpg + 180hp sounds good to me. I dont really want a turbo at this point.
