Finally got around to measuring the '97 ports. 59mm x 48mm with "D" shaped ports...

Which heads are those? Any pics?

EDIT: scratch that.....EJ20K heads you measured....
Also...I was talking with one of the guys who had a STi Ver7 head. He noted that they where the small ports. The intake ports where IDENTICAL to the USDM WRX heads as well as the USDM STi heads.
So this means that the small ports are the ones we got; USDM WRX/STi heads. 2 different castings for the NEW PHASE heads; MY00+ GD.

yes, the STi head and then the STi spec C head...I would be very interested in the seeing a cc comparison of pretty much all the heads (minus the ej18 and ej22 sohc).

a follow to my post, post #54

okies.....confirmed....the SMALL PORT STi V7 heads are the same casting as the USDM WRX heads. The BIG PORT casting seems to have started out with the Ver5 STi/RA. They are all the NEWER head casting, which is why they run a different cam than the Ver 1-4. You can see this clearly when you take out the cam and the end caps to where the cam seal is.

Seems all the old school heads are of a large size because it was still OBD1 for the most part and less emmissions then. The NEWER castings, which we got for our USDM '02 WRX and other countries UK? AUS? got the economy heads; small port casting. The S201-S204 heads and SPEC C heads all may just be the same size in port aside from factory porting at the entry, which I've seen in some pictures. Because NEWER cars are coming out, many speculate them to have LARGER ports EVER! But a lot has to do with the AVCS and cam profile which is why it does flow better than the older ones, IMO.

OKIES, something NEW.... I got to take a look at the FIRST DOHC NA 2.5L that we got here in the US. This head is the hydraic style valvetrain. A '96 2.5L. I NOTICED that the port is the SAME SHAPE as the gasket. The 4mm LOST is not apparent on this head. The valve covers are stamped with "4 CAM 16 VALVE" on the sides. The valve guides look just like mine so this port is actually a bit different from the SVX port, which I've seen is the same port casting on the OLD STi EJ20G heads, not sure of the Legacy EJ20G but the Imprezas seem to be. NOTE: The engine is from a friend of mines (wagonL) and is out of a '96 Legacy 2.5GT. He somewhat touched the splitters so I'm not sure if it was skinny like the '98 or what.

Here is a pic. NOW we have a '96 DOHC 2.5L head in the bunch. Not sure of the Combustion chamber yet. No doubt these '96 EJ25NA heads are KING here as a US-Spec Subaru head for intake port.

Here its layered on top of my '98 EJ25NA head to compare with the BIG PORT STi head on top.
'96 head LAYERED over the botten head which is a '98.

Here you can see the Valve guide how it protudes into the port MORE than the DOHC EJ25NA head.

I know this is mostly a comparison of the DOHC heads, but what about the 99 SOHC heads compared to the DOHC heads port size.

the '99-01 SOHC

The port runner on the 97-99 DOHC are D-style thus allowing some flow. The '96 DOHC have a BIG port entry of the old skool heads and flows more than the SOHC. The SOHC isn't as wide, but is taller than the '97-'99 DOHC.

The difference in the SOHC and the DOHC is that the power curve is different but peak power is the same. The SOHC has more torque in the lower revs to midrange. The DOHC has similer midrange but doesn't drop off as much as the SOHC as the rpms past 5000rpms.

I measured the ports of three heads over the weekend:

EUDM MY97 EJ25D: 58 x 44 mm (58 x 30 without injector boss)
JDM MY99 EJ254 (with AVCS): 59 x 49 mm (59 x 35 without injector boss)
USDM MY92 EJ22T: 49 x 44 mm (49 x 31 without injector boss)

I also calculated the cross sectional area of intake and port runner. I will put the Excel-file onto my homepage after Christmas.

There is. You can use lifters and shim of the EJ20K/EJ25D on EJ20G heads. You can use the hydraulic cams on solid lifters, but not the other way around (due to cam wear, hydraulic cams are hardened allround, the mechanical cams only the lobes not the base circle I've been told).

I should have some more numbers to post in fairly short order. I purchased an Ej20G auto tranny '95 WRX engine and an Ej20H TT engine yesterday as well. I will add my info as I find time. I have been in the midst of buying a house and a business and haven't had much time to dink in the garage. That should change in a few weeks and I will be sure to do my part for this thread and the knowledge database...

Love should also drive a Subaru.

But I'm not sure if my wife will appreciate lifting the intake manifold to measure the MY90 EJ20D ports!

My fiance drives a '99 RS. When I told her I was selling my MY00 RS, I asked her if she wanted my built motor or if she wanted me to continue with my plans to install the Rimmer SC on her car. Her response?

Can't I have both?!?
