Why do people think this is just SO unthinkable? Mitsu dealers are writing down VIN's at auto crosses and to even insinuate that SOA might use this as part of a claim denial makes you some kinda dink. Silly

Parts guy: I'll need your VIN, DOB, Drivers License, insurance, registration, passport, travel papers, and a note from your mommy... |

Or....
You can do what I did. Just get the vin from a wrecked car, same model/ year and they are none the wiser. Hell, we could just circulate a few vins on the web. Dealer: why have you purchased 20 d/p gaskets in the past two months? You: I'm working on an art project, don't worry about it. |

I just had to read the thread after seeing the title. OMG!
![]() I've been in Subaru Parts for close to 10 years and never heard a customer complain about providing a full or partial VIN for any part. Before you start whining how about cutting us a break and let us do our job the right way and avoid you yammerin' in our face about how we sold you the wrong part. ![]() I may be considered an old schooler by McDade since I slightly preferred ProQuest/Bell & Howell/Snap On catalog [http://www.proquestautomotive.com/] over SubaruFAST. Our B&H system was always able to accept the last 6 digits to narrow down and select the VIN from a short list it generates. With SubaruFAST you always need the entire VIN or you have to fill in the fields (build a car) to narrow down what you need. Both catalogs have pros and cons but after learning SubaruFAST I have found more pros in it. I think the hot keys in B&H should be incorporated in to SubaruFAST though. Makes it faster and easier to jump through the catalog. |

^ Part slingers should know their stock well enough to get me a simple gasket that has never changed for any wrx and sti. Or get me an oil filter for an 04 sti. That's not whining. Glad you're not my local parts guy, jeez.

subyfanatic isn't a "parts slinger".
A good percentage of Subaru dealers are not stand alone dealers, they are add on dealers from bigger company's. Like Ford, or GM. The parts guy you are asking for parts from probably is not a dedicated Subaru parts guys. Asking for a vin for a oil filter or common parts is a bit excessive. You all still seem not to understand that even though you think ''its just a wrx and they are all the same'' you are wrong. The vin will help narrow down things like color codes, build dates, emissions qualifications, option codes, it filters out all the stuff that the car doesn't have. |

I didn't say he was. I said they, parts managers, (affectionately termed slingers) should be able to .

ahah a bus dealer, they need a way to track all those parts. Every part sold has a warranty, and they probably sell tons and tons of parts for buses. They are constantly being worked on.

I just can't get used to the Fast system. It's a lot like the guys next door at Ford use. Every time I play with it I get frustrated. It probably has a lot to do with it being Ford, but still. I know the system I have and I'm good with it. Though being in a new place I'm having to learn ADP. Grrr... |

I worked at a Toyota dealership and we used Reynolds which in my opinion is MUCH easier to use than ADP...I now work for a Honda dealer and we use ADP. Honda sucks anyways because even if you have the VIN it still will not filter the vehicle's exterior or interior colors...Toyota was so much easier to work with and i made a ton more money at Toyota.

Who, for extra credit, can name off all the part numbers used in a DOHC (the common ones) head gasket job? We'll throw in extra credit for the tensioner and idler pulley numbers as well as the timing belt (since you're that far in).11044AA610

It's funny how all the dealership dorks come out of the woodwork for threads like this.
