I'm thinking that replacing my front right axle is the way to go after reading all the advice threads on NASIOC. Has anyone local done this before?

dude... front axle is cake.

1) Buy replacement from local autozone / discount / etc.

2) jack up car

3) take off wheel

4) take off the 32mm axle hub nut

5) undo bolt at bottom of balljoint and pop out (so hub can move outward to get axle off of tranny shaft)

6) use small screwdriver or punch to pop out pin holding axle to tranny shaft

7) slide off tranny, then out of hub, and remove.

8) Installation is the reverse of removal...

I don't even think #4 is required.

If you undo the strut bolts. You gotta do one or the other. I have tried to do it without messing with them, but find you just don't have enough space to squeeze it out.

I find it easier to undo the balljoint pinch bolt, unless it is frozen in the knuckle.

#4 is required no matter what you do. I think I would know, I've taken 3 wrx's apart. Removing the strut bolts is much easier than separating the ball joint.

2 at the bottom. Just mark the bolts/struts so you can get the camber back where it was.

Yeah, #4 is required.

On my car, at least, it is easier to pop out the ball joint, so I don't mess up the alignment. On you guys' new cars, I would think it wouldn't be much harder, especially since these cars have enjoyed the nice, relatively dry, salt-free south all their lives.

Then again, on my uncle's car, the ball joint was seized in the knuckle, so we could have just undone the strut bolts (but we were just removing the inner joint from the tranny, so we undid one of the A-arm bolts).
