Thumbs up Review: Perrin Short Shifter Kit

So I received my Perrin Short shifter from Altasports yesterday
(http://www.altasports.net/subaru/int...ers/perrin.htm)

Here's the Lowdown.

Initial Impressions:
This thing is small. It is the black shiftpoint only. You can see it attached to the stock shifter lever in the pictures on their site. The fit and finish are top notch, having worked in manufaturing in the past, i was impressed that the time was taken to properly dress out a part that you will never see again. I like that attention to detail. The instructions that it comes with are clear, and made good sense.

Installation:
Following the instructions was a piece of cake. Like all other kits, you disassemble the console to get at the shifter assembly. Then you leave the stock lever in place, and slide the new shiftpoint over the lever. You can adjust the height from 48mm (shortest) to 62 mm (longest, but still shorter than stock) , I set mine at 54mm, and tightened it down.

The worst part is trimming the plate around the shift area. You have to do this for all shifters, so I wasn't surprised to do it. But it did take some trial and error to get the right amount taken out. On a side note, I tried reversing the plate 180 and bending the litttle tabs at first, but then the back of the shifter made contact, so I put it back to normal and trimmed the excess out of the way. Someone will make a lot of money selling a version of this plate that is trimmed properly (hint, hint)

I then used the stock bushings and bolt to attach the linkage, and verified that all was good. It was, and I reassembled the console and took it for a drive.

In Use:
The difference is night and day. As everyone has said with every short shifter, it is a world of difference, and this was no execption. Since you keep the stock lever, and it has an internal rubber bushing, there was very little change in NVH. I can hear a very slight vibration around 4000 rpm, which is most pronounced in 1st and 3rd. I am going to try a few different heights and verify that I removed enough material from the plate, and see if it goes away. Although, I should note that if I wasn't listening for this noise, it is so quiet that I wouldn't pick it up.

In general, I am very pleased.

Pros:
  • Easy install
  • Inexpensive
  • Low NVH with stock lever
  • Adjustable

Cons:
  • Can"t just turn plate 180 to avoid rubbing

Overall, I give it thumbs up.
