Default Question to you guys up in Flag and cold weather.

Do your cars run rough during the snowy winter months? While I was up there and at the Grand Canyon there was a constant high-pitch sound coming from my engine at idle. I was worried that it could be my belts or my radiator but now that I'm back in Phoenix it sounds completely normal. Ideas?

Edit: Not just at idle either, also at higher RPMs.

Flag is just like Connecticut is now - Cold... Very... Very...Cold... (wonder why I moved?)

First question is why type of Oil are you using? I have noticed that if I didn't change over to the 5w30 from the 10w30 I was using, then my engine did seem a bit rough. (not that it should hurt anything, but it was noticeable.)

Could be many other things I know, but that is my 1st thought.. my 2 cents if you will.

Side note- when I changed over to 5w30 for these few 'cooler' months here in the valley, I noticed my car was acting Diff... so - who knows....

Oil weight stayed the same 10w-30 Castrol Syn. However, I've made trips up to Flag when I was running Mobil 1 10w-30 and there wasn't anything wrong. I hope the oil isn't the culprit...

My car feels a tad ropey in the mornings after being left out overnight...

The gear shift is very notchy and the engine feels tight... I just put it down to it being a lot colder recently and the oil not being sloshed around the gearbox until it's turned a few times - by the end of the road all is normal...

come to think o fit - I feel ropey most mornings too

Ha. Try <20 degree (Farenheit, you silly European) mornings. It was a bitch to get my STi into first gear if I didn't let it warm up a bit.

All of the things that you guys are mentioning happened. However, it was the engine in particular. Dunno, if it wasn't a Sunday I would have taken it to the Subaru dealership up there or something, but nobody was open.

Prolly the altitude. Phoenix at 1200 ft, Flag is around 7000.

My car runs just fine when it's cold up here in Flag. In fact it runs much better then it does when it's hot out, just don't run super heavy oil especially if you park it outside. Flag doesn't get very cold though.
