Subaru parts has a triple gauge pack for NA cars. It replaces the clock pod, and has voltage, iol temp, and vac.
It's a clean pod and totally stock, not rice at all.....now if you have a pillar gauge pod on your 2.5i I could see where people would say "rice". It is nice to have those gauges as a bit of insurance. Look them up on subaruparts.com |

oil pressure, water temp, and volt have been the 3 most common extra gauges added onto cars for years - even N/A ones. Now if you have a boost gauge on your N/A car...that's another story

But most boost gauges also have a readout for vacuum, and that can be useful info also.

Personally, I'd be most interested in Oil Temp, Water Temp, and EGT. And a knock/shift light. Oil and water will let you know when the car is ready to be beat on and when you've been beaten on it for too long. EGT is good for a "what the crap just happened I shouldn't be seeing 1900F!" sort of thing and the knock light will be your first warning about bad gas. The shift light is just a convenience.
Oil press FTL because it's mainly going to tell you that you just lost your engine about 10 seconds ago. |

Haha very true. I have the scan gauge 2 above the pod and it reads RPM, MPH, water temp and one any other random thing (MPG, TPS, Load, etc), to go with the Vac, Volt, and Oil temp. Mainly have it because main cluster reads in Km/H. |

I have a DEFI DIN gauge pack with oil temp, water temp, and oil pressure. Quite helpful for monitoring the engine during track days.

As far as why not oil pressure, mainly because it tends to show OK or failed (yes, yes, I realize you can extract other data on it such as wither or not the correct weight of oil is being used, etc, but I'm interested in gauges for the ability to kill the engine or take corrective action before engine damage occurs). If it's showing failed, you better hope you caught the moment it indicated. |

oil pressure, can also warn you of a failing or about to fail oil pump. I have a oil pressure gauge on my truck, and I know my oil pump is going because, the pressure is fluctuating, where it used to be constant. I know in my 2.5I, I'm planning on putting in, oil temp, water temp, oil pressure, voltage, trans temp, AFR, and EGT. I'm also a mechanic and like to know exactly what is going on in my car, and I'm planning an STI swap.
also major johnson what compass thing is that under radio? |

i notice alot of people going with an extra water temp gauge...is the stocker particularly innacurate, or too slow to respond?
if i had to pick 3 gauges for a pod i'd probably go with oil temp/press and EGT. |

the stock subie water temp gauge is basically a dummy gauge, its only moves at set temps. so when your car is first warming up it won't move until a set temp, then when it is at normal operation temp. it won't move until temps get into a dangerous area. basically they didn't want every commuter idiot that didn't know anything about cars bringing in there car every time they got stuck in traffic and the temps climbed abit. so the stock gauge only gives you enough info to get into trouble, and not enough to prevent it.

Just in regards to looks: I think a pillar pod would definetly look stupid or rice or whatever you want to call it, and i think thats where olsen1234's RICE comment came from. However i think an oil pressure/ water, maybe voltage would be cool in an NA car if placed somewhere sleek. I woud think it would be more necessary in a more modded or older car then my new 07 but if i could place them somewhere sleek and attractive i would be onboard. Maybe i should look at the turbo forums for placement ideas.

I think gauges are a great idea, I bought my sister the triple gauge pack for her birthday, and installed them for her, and they look great, I don't know if she uses them....but my thought was that she is not the best about maintaining her car, and she drives around with my niece in there, I just wanted a little peace of mind for myself and her that if something is going to go wrong, maybe she will have a little advance warning. I care about my family, that's why I made her get the Subie instead if another honda like she had!

+1 the pillar is the best mounting point, and I like the look of them there to. you guys only say they are rice, because all the cars paul walker drove in the movies had them.
definition of rice: a part that is put on the car that is purely for aestetic use and doesn't provide any benefit. i.e. a FWD civic with a giant wing. you can't call it rice just because you don't like it. Last edited by H-Dtech; 01-23-2008 at 02:01 PM. |
