Chinese Firm Unveils Radical Hybrid

No surprise then, that the company's 20kWh lithium-iron phosphate battery pack can go 70 miles on a single (long-ish) nine-hour 220 VAC charge… with a gas engine ready to kick in to extend range or increase power at any time. With a BYD test-fleet of taxis preparing to take to the streets of Shenzhen, the first automaker to sell an out-of-the-box, plug-in hybrid could well be Chinese. Green Car Congress »

I think they were only talking about the styling of the car's chassis, not the hybrid system.

And my personal objection... 70miles on one 9 hr charge? so i charge it for 9hrs for less than one hr of driving? (our hwy speed limit in my state is 75). Boy, I've seen remote control cars with better battery life. And is that 70miles at what average speed? 50? 35? i bet at 75mph it only gets like 30miles before it resorts to engine power.

but more importantly ... is it painted with lead-based paint?
