Q: "At-Home" Engine Diagnostic Tools

Hey Guys,

Would anybody happen to have any experience with the engine
diagnostic tools for Subarus?

What I am looking for is optimally something that can run on both
my 06 WRX and 99 RS.

open source type scan tools are the best bang for you buck

And do they actually work reliably? Because that is what I was going to do, just wanted to hear some experiences about those first.

if you are talking about just a code reader, I bought a cheap generic one from autozone, works well with all cars. tells you codes, and which monitors have run

I just ordered an Ebay USB scantool for like $28 shipped, it does EVERYTHING the expensive standalone scan tools do(sapposedly) ...I will let you know when I get it how great it works

The bennefit from using a USB to laptop program is you can integrate tuning and diagnostics into the same screen.

Greddy(or HKS...can't remember 100%) makes a system that eliminates the need for the laptop, and is a screen with fully monitorable engine specs...its rather expensive though, and for the price you could BUY a laptop and USB scan tool, and integrate it into your computer using free software like

Been using Rom Raider's (aka Enginuity) logger for over a year and it works great.You can also monitor real time data without recording.They just recentlly added ODBII non-turbo definitions.You just need a laptop and a Tactrix cable.

This is exactly what I want!

You don't still happen to have the link for this? You think the 99 RS is supported?

I am really not into spending thousands of dollars on this scanning tool so I think the Greddy/HKS is not really what I am looking for.

I love the idea of being able to find out why the 'check engine' light turns on, and in addition to that still be able to tune the car at least a little. At least I find it interesting to plot all kinds of features of my car

pre 02 Subarus are not supported for any "tuning" features.

But you should still be able to check all your engine perameters and diagnostics, including checking and clearing codes.

I'm going to be tuning with my Emanage Ultimate right on my carputer, with another window open for OBD2 diagnostic... we'll see how well it works
