Default V5 Swap Question

Hey all, i just have a quick question, ive got a cheap score on a V5 front clip, and i was out at the local track tonight for practice.

Some guy there was chirping a lot of hate towards the V4 and V5 EJ20's, are there any common problems with these engines? He was spewing something about a bad top, or bottom end, cant remember.

Any info would be much appreciated!

Thanks

V4 is EJ20K and V5 is EJ207 so they are quite different engines internally. The V5 is a big improvement in cylinder head and bottom end rigidity. We do have lots of problems with bottom end failure in JDM Sti half cuts. This is due mainly to existing damage from hard work and bad service history and secondly due to them being worked even harder once they are fitted to cars over here.

Split the bottom end and replace the bearings and you should have no problems if you run the engine on a good octane fuel.

<--- V5 STi driveline. Runs like top, spins to 8.5 with no complaints ever, never even dirties the oil before a change (at 3k). Not a single leak or even damp spot on the block. Uber nice.

Wish i could say the same for my dirty, greasy ej257...

Ive come across a 2004 STI swap package for ~10k, but i can still get that V5 front clip for 5k. Is the 2004 STI 6spd drivetrain that much of an improvement over the '99 V5 EJ207 5spd?

Reason being is my total budget is roughly 10k to finish the car... not really looking for a slew of parts for the whole price range, although it is tempting... but ive heard the 2004 STI tranny is a hand grenade waiting to go off. Not sure what to think, any insight in the matter?

Looking to swap within the next month or 2.

Thanks!
