Default Honda refusese any press conference at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show

Quote:
The refusal of Honda to give any press conference is the latest hint that the 2009 Detroit Auto Show could mean that the carmaker is having problem with the money. The Japanese auto manufacturer still intent in unveiling the production Insight hybrid, but will do so by merely adding its Prius-killer to the showroom floor along with all its line-up. The move significantly came a day after Nissan and Infiniti totally dropped out of Detroit, which were then followed by Suzuki, Mitsubishi, Ferrari, Land Rover and Rolls-Royce. Honda refuses to expend extra money on live presentations with special effects and large travel budgets when the U.S. automobile market is going down the drain. Honda will not provide any press conferences in Chicago, also. If Detroit is going to be slow, Chicago is shaping up to be worse.

Default Nissan reverses decision to skip Chicago auto show

Quote:
NASHVILLE -- Nissan North America, bowing to pressure from dealers, reversed a decision announced Monday and said it will participate in February's Chicago auto show.

"We have found a way to maintain a presence at the Chicago show through our dealers, while still demonstrating the fiscal responsibility required by these challenging times," Nissan said in a statement late Wednesday.

Nissan is sticking with its plan to pull out of Detroit's North American International Auto Show in January. It is the biggest of six automakers to withdraw from Detroit as marketers curb spending in response to U.S. vehicle sales falling to 25-year lows.

Nissan spokesman Alan Buddendeck had explained the initial decision to skip Detroit and Chicago by saying Nissan had reached its intended audience during this month's Los Angeles auto show. At that event,
Nissan unveiled the Nissan 370Z roadster and a new model called the Cube.

"Given the extraordinary economic and industry climate, all well-managed companies have a fiduciary responsibility to review strategies and tactics for going to market," Nisssan said in yesterday's statement.

"As everyone knows, the automotive industry is facing severe and prolonged headwinds in North America and around the world. It's a climate that demands decisions that are often difficult and even controversial."

The Chicago auto show draws about 1 million visitors a year.
In addition to Nissan and its Infiniti brand, Porsche, Mitsubishi, Suzuki, Land Rover, Rolls-Royce and Ferrari have decided to skip the Detroit venue.

I do not see how they jump to the conclusion that Honda refusing to have a press conference - which can be done at little to no cost (relatively speaking) - means that they are having money issues.

Can someone please post a link to this "article" because it looks to me like it is just another over-dramatized blog-entry.

Source -- Automotive News (Subscription required, I don't have one...)

The blog entry I saw was that they weren't going to do a big dog & pony show for the production Insight reveal, and would instead have it on the floor and have execs available to talk about it. That was at Autoblog Green.

The auto shows are mostly lame anyway. They spend millions on concepts that will never be made (no matter how good the "public reaction" is), and cars that by the time you go to the show, they're old news.

Not EXACTLY related but here's a link saying Honda is doing quite well even with the crappy economy. My fire chief owns a Honda stealership and he posted this on his facebook.

^ I have read more than one news story that says that Honda is possibly in an even better financial position than even Toyota. Sure the economy has the sux, and sales will be down, but Honda is positioned to be hurt the least.
I'd like to read a "real" news story that says otherwise - and not some blog/psuedo-news story like the one in the first post.

I'm not much for conspiracy theories - but I wonder if this has anything to do w/ the looming bailout.

IE - "If you are going to prop that crap up we sure as heck are not going to promote a show in that state. Good luck w/a show without our buyers walking past your junk"

Imagine that show w/ only American cars.

I have a friend who works for Toyota corporate in Torrance, Ca and told me that the LA show was moved to this thanksgiving week from it's traditional Jan slot because most of the major firms decided this by consensus and are planning on reusing the same cars in Detroit instead of having two sets, and need the time to ship them from LA to Detroit.

Also I can see from the POV of luxury marques mentioned above what a waste of money to open booths in Detroit

I say reveal the Honda Insight at the Washington DC show. A heck of a lot more Honda customers here than in southeast Michigan.

LA == Insight Concept
Detroit == Production Insight

(Replace the LED headlights with projectors, make the side mirrors taller, give it a production interior and cheaper/less goofy wheels. Done.)
