Default Behind the grill intercooler

I was discussing FMICs with a friend the other night. We were discussing the fact that many people complain about the remove of the bumper beam. Both he and I feel that it doesn't really matter as it is being replaced with an intercooler and neither one would do much with any kind of speed (>15 mph). We then got on the topic of the intercooler location used in the WRC cars. For those not familiar with the location, it is behind the grill. You can see this in the images below. You can clearly see the bottom of the intercooler just above the bumper. In the second image, you can see the piping and the fact that the air intake has been moved to the stock TMIC location.

My friend and I surmise that the intercooler could be installed in this location by removing the AC condensor, possibly leaning the radiator back or shortening it and cutting some of the radiator support. To facilitate airflow, a separator between the IC and the radiator would be needed with the air that passed through the intercooler venting up. This, I believe, is the scoop in the front of the hood in the first picture. The scoop, I think, forces the air that has been used for cooling the boost up and out of the engine bay. I am not sure that the radiator needs a similar system, hence the reason that the scoop is not separated, although that cannot be seen very well in the images here.

All of this being said, has anyone ever tried to run a system like this? It seems to similar benefits to running an FMIC while keeping the bumper beam that people seem to love. I haven't seen anyone running a system like this. It seems kind of like a vmount but not quite. Any thoughts?

that big canister muffler looking piece on the right side of the pic is a liquid to air intercooler. the cooler behind the grill is probably an oil cooler or something. even if it is an intercooler it can be much smaller because they have the liquid to air IC also.

It has to be the intercooler. There is not another one located on the car. There is not one in the usual top or front mount places.

I know what a V mount is but this doesn't really seem like a v mount. It seems like a cross between a v mount and a front mount. I could just be crazy here and it really is a v mount, but it doesn't quite look it to me.

im sorry but you are wrong. The big canister is just a plenum in the piping.. they started using that design a few years ago. The core behing the grill is the intercooler.

Thanks for the link twizzstyle. I was under the impression that a v mount is demonstrated in the picture below. The name comes from the shape the intercooler and radiator make.

If you guys are calling it a v mount, that's fine. I was just a bit curious.

Most of the installs I've seen (like the link I posted) the intercooler sits straight behing the grill, but you still have to angle the radiator back to make room for it... so it is still a V-mount like you are thinking, just the intercooler sits straight.

Sorry to correct guyz,
The WRC setup at the top pic shows a front mounted air to air intercooler
The socalled "muffler" thing at the right is actually a pressure tank that is incorporated in the IC piping.
After a gear shift nthe engine will be fed with full pressure..........making monstrous torque at redicilous low revs.
Almost 800Nm at low revs and then we mean really low like 1800revs thanks to the airtank
In the beginning of this invention, Ford used a very large air tank mounted outside the engine department that was presurized during warm up............soon it was forbidden, the tank has to fit under the hood and has to be incorporated in the IC piping.
