I've learned to stop trying, especially with a car as old as mine

Angry subaru paint is crap

When my car was in a wreck and was in my shop I noticed when prepping my car for paint that I could very quickly and easily sand past the clearcoat and into basecoat. And I have never encountered this problem before with any other car also whenever a bird craps on it its not to long before it gets etched in. "Thanks Subaru for skimping quality on paint for the sake of saving a buck"

My paint is still alive and decently shiny.
I see scratches at the light though.

I look at the hood and I see many silver spots.
Yep bare metal.

It's not only Subaru...

Any of the 90's Chevy's I've had all have thin paint and thin fender sheetmetal. My 95 Impala SS is perhaps the worst. If I look at the fender wrong, it will get a dent/crease in it. If a piece of dust floats across the hood, it will take a divit out of the paint.

But I digress...

All posts I've read so far have been understatements. The factory paint on my '93 toyota looks better than the paint on my '04 wrx. Even that's an understatement.

Yes, Subaru's paint is horrible...

Best paint i've come across is from Mercedes Benz...

i too agree with everything said here. the only good thing about having thin sheet metal is that dents are pretty easy to get out....

My front bumper paint is all flaked off to bare plastic in the lower corners(had a few meetings with snow banks this winter). Shouldn't there be some sort of primer under the paint? It looks to me almost like its not factory paint on there?

My 02's paint seems to be holding up just fine. But for the sake of making Scoobie mine with a personal touch, I am planning on painting her.
I do need to say that when I have driven it at higher speeds there have been some chips to my grill paint, also could be from the fact that it is an 02 and has had 6 years of road wear.
If you live in Michigan my partner and I do custom work and would be willing to paint your car if you want us to.

The way they've been dumping salt/sand on the roads the last two winters, it's no wonder

That must be what happened to my driver's side rear door! LOL! And I thought some moron just hit it with their door.

My miata which was much lower than my wrx had about 10 times less rock chips on the front after owning them about the same amount of time. No lie. The paint is the easiest to chip out of any car i've owned.

hmm my 2000 RS paint is still looking pretty good.
just starting to get a little peeling of the clear coat on one (bird-poo-impacted) spot of the sun-roof, and by the driver-side door handle after much key scuffing.
Other than that, color is still vibrant

it does chip pretty easily though... and the fenders dent ohh so easily.

that teflon based wax stuff seems to do a pretty good job of protecting, and of hiding/filling swirls

Subaru does not have the crappiest paint. I think that award goes to Chrysler, or at least it did back in the late 1990s-early 2000s. My buddy's black Dakota R/T needed to be repainted when it was only 7 or 8 years old because the paint had started oxidizing on the hood, roof, and bed rails. Apparently, they only sprayed those cars with a crappy integrated-clearcoat paint.

The paint on the Honda Civics (8th generation) is much, much worse. The factory paint job is not worthy of the Honda badge. Brown spots appear under the clear coat, and it scratches very easily.

worth getting a couple of extra layers of clear coat added to the bumper ?

get a touch-up pen or couple cans of color and clearcoat, for touch ups maybe.
paintscratch.com does a pretty good color matching job. Used their paint to do my skirts
