Painting my rims - Page 2

I have had painted rims for about 6 months no problem. They are actually 06 TR rims which i painted black-i will take a picture a bit later and post it so you can see..., cheap and effective i cant complain. Just be sure to prep them thoroughly. i used 300 grit sandpaper on mine. Good luck,

Painted wheels look cheap?

What a lame comment

I had my OEM BBS wheels done flat black, and they get comments from every other Subaru owner. They look amazing. Everyone else is stuck with silver or gold.
Besides, the person who made the comment is only driving a WRX

Who's cheap now? Couldn't afford the STI? Maybe you should ask China for more credit money

The key is prep. I would just have them powder coated though, gloss black is one of the cheapest colors you can have done..

Do not need to sand through anything. A scuff and a good clean will provide sufficient adhesion.

This whole cheap comment is absurd. If all of us were not cheap we would be on the Lambo Gallardo site. The WRX is the poor man's race car and thank god for it!!

powder coating is definitely alot stronger than spray paint, but you have to be careful of out gassing with the aluminum, if its not done right, you could have pits/ blisters in the powder coat.

I had a set of 16 inch WRX alloys powder coated gloss black and couldn't be happier with the result. I removed the centercaps and valves before taking them to the powdercoat shop. I also gave them a decent cleaning so I think the shop owner gave me a tiny discount. Total for all four wheels was around $175,I think. Damned if I can find any pics but if I do I will post them. You can rattle can them but it won't be as durable and if you don't take the time to prep the heck out of each rim the results can leave you very angry and/or frustrated.

**** idiot. There's WRX's that can blow your "mighty STI" away on the track. Saying that somebody is "cheap" or poor because they don't have an STI is lame at best.

Powder coating should be more durable than paint, and can be layered just like paint. I would highly recommend getting them powder coated. If you do a good job (or find a good shop to do it for you) they will last a long time.

did mine flat black and love'em no chips or anything sanded real good and used a dupli-color wheel paint.

the 06-07 wrx wheels are sick, much cooler than any other year for the wrx. They dont look cheap painted if done right. I think the 16's from prior to 06 look better painted than stock as well. I like any stock wrx and sti wheel painted gloss black, or gunmetal more than any stock colors.
