Default DIY: Shifter/Center Console Accent Light

First of all, credit for this mod idea goes to Admission_Regret (see his thread here)

This is a pretty simple mod that adds an LED in the overhead sun visor area, shining down to illuminate the center cons0le and shifter area with a soft glow. It’s a really nice touch.

I did this to my 06 WRX wag0n and chose blue. I took a bunch of pics during the process and since nobody has come up w/ a how-to guide yet, I thought I’d post this up.

Parts list:
  • OEM Visor P/N: 92011FE132NE ($14 + s/h from SGP)
    • Sun visor didn’t come stock on MY06
  • Blue LED 3mm/4v/20mA/30/2000mcd ($0.67 + s/h from superbrightleds.com)
  • Resistors ($0.99/5pk from Radioshack)
    • 1x 10K Ohm
    • 1x 4.7K ohm
    • http://led.linear1.org/led.wiz <-- use this site to determine the resistor size u need!
  • Heat-shrink tubing or electrical tape
  • Wire-taps (~$1.99 from Radioshack)
  • Short length of wire (<1ft.)
  • Hot glue
Tools:
  • Soldering arms + solder gun + solder
  • Wire cutters
  • Power dri11
    • Bits: 5/16”, and 7/64”
  • Hot glue gun
  • Nylon panel tool OR flat head
  • Philips head screw driver
Step 1 - Creating the LED circuit:

I decided to go with a single blue LED for my setup - the 3mm blue one from superbrightleds.com. Looking at the specs, this lamp puts out 2000mcd @ 4v, which is way too bright for this application. So I added 2 resistors – 10K Ohm+5K Ohm:

My circuit goes something like this:

[+] ----/\/10K resistor\/\---/\/5K resistor\/\----[3mm LED]-----[-]

After the soldering, I used heat-shrink tubing to cover it all up (as seen in a few pics down).

Step 2 - Getting to the wires:

Remove the maplights by popping off the lens (use nylon tool or taped up flat-head to prevent scratches). There are 2 philips screws holding the map light assembly. Unscrew those and it will drop down.

Pop out this tab (flat head should work if you don’t have a nylon panel tool), and unscrew the visor clips to drop the headliner slightly:

(note, MY06 already have the metal bracket required for mounting the sun-visor. Someone mentioned that previous MY’s may not)

Step 2: Tapping power from the auto-dimming mirror harness:

There are many ways you can tap power for this, and I chose the easiest way. By tapping the auto-dimming mirror’s power, the LED will come on when you turn on the car. I was too lazy to tap it to something that came on with the headlights (likely more preferable)…
The wire harness for the auto-dimming mirror goes something like this:

[+]-------[yellow/black wire]---{
[-]--------[black wire]-----------{ you want to tap this one
[+]-------[yellow/red wire]-----{ and this one

Also, I had previously tapped this harness for another mod: hard-wired GPS. I used molex connectors in hopes for a modular setup, so for this mod, I plugged into my existing setup:

Once power’s tapped and LED circuit is created, TEST to make sure it works (and brightness expectations are met)

Step 3 - Prepare the sun-visor bracket:

MY06+ doesn’t come with a sun visor, so I ordered one from SGP. Since I don’t need the actual visor part (looks like it’d only interfere w/ this mod), I removed the visor flap. Just pull it off its hinge.
You’ll want to clear the area where you’ll be drilling the hole for the LED. I used wire cutters to cut away the plastic:

Drill the hole. Use a 7/64” bit, which made for a very snug fit for the 3mm LED.

Step 5 - Drilling the headliner:

The back of the sun-visor bracket has a little nub sticking out (as seen in above picture). You’ll need to drill a hole for it in the headliner. I used a 5/16” bit.

Next, I used the same bit to drill a hole for the LED wires to go through:

Step 6 - Installing and aiming the LED:

For testing the LED’s aim, I temporarily installed the bracket to the headliner and plugged it in. Once I found the angle I wanted, I hot glued around the LED.

Step 7 - Put it all back together:

At first, I thought it was a little too bright... but it was because i was testing in complete darkness. In reality, street lights will spill in, and the brightness is perfect

In regards to previous MY's not having the bracket for that sun visor, MY02 came with the visor already installed, so this should work no problem on '02-'03s. Nice job, looks really good.

great write up, if i post LED specs for a different bulb is there a formula i can use to find the proper resistors like you did? thanks in advanced.

hah, i just read one of your posts where u said "blue's a no go because it always comes out teal" or somehing... i don't mind the green too much, but wish the gauge cluster was brighter.

those are plugs from computer parts actually... i think they were from some CPU fan i bought a while back... it might be easier to connect directly to the power wires unless you have spare plugs laying around also.

hmm... there are a few "led wizards" out there like this one: http://led.linear1.org/led.wiz but they only give you the resistor sizes for max output per your LED's specs... i really don't know much about electronics so I just kept on adding resistors until it was dim enough Ended up with my 15K Ohm.

nice write up. What nav unit is that? I like your screen on it. I just picked up a garmin nuvi 205 and am looking at doing some sort of splash screen like that.

Thanks for all the comments guys

That's one of garmin's older units... the 350. Check out one of my other threads for splash screens

Can someone please tell me what size the bolt is for the visor bracket? I am just going to paint a little piece of flat plastic and use that to mount the LEDs rather that dropping $15.

one of the million things on my to-do list. however, as an option to have it switched, i was thinking about wiring both the map lights to one of the buttons, and then using the other for the shifter light. just my 2 cents
