These rod bearing failures are definitely a defect batch. Has to be. I blew my lands on my motor at 10K and the rod bearings looked brand new. I have over 20K with the same bearings (I even split the block) running forged pistons and I do DET often enough that if the bearings were weak, mine would have spun as well.

I'm subscribed to that thread as well - you don't have to keep pointing these out as I've been aware of all of them. I'll get to it as soon as I can. If failure info is posted in another thread, then please do point those out.

Looks like we are seeing higher mileage failures now with anonymous at 9500...so the motors that got past the intial few thousand miles are showing the weakness as time goes on

So lets see, the STI's are popping pistons left and right, and the WRX's are having bearing failures. Such a shame because they really are fun cars to drive.

Knock on wood, I've got a CAI that I haven't tuned for yet and have been running fine since last summer; but then again its not my daily driver. I don't know about you guys, but if my motor gives up the ghost then I am just going to buy a shortblock from importautosports. . . They're selling them for dirt cheap on that website.

Hey Tea Cup, I just got my long block replaced for a broken rod at 5000 miles. I'm now at 6500. Also, there is a humming sound, on and off constantly at 60 mph and when I make a sharp right turn, there is a knocking sound, similar to the rod problem, but from the left side of the suspensions. I took it to the dealer and they said that it's the lsd that is making the noise when I make that right turn. As for the humming sound, they don't know. I'll look for the VIN and date and pm you.

Alright...I'm officially spooked. I've got an '09 hatchback with a VIN ending in the 805000's. I've been asking around about a noise that happens after start-up and within the first 20 ft of rollout that sounds to me like a drivetrain/transmission type of noise. Best I can describe is that it's a one-time clank that comes from somewhere up front, only after start-up. Definitely not a ping in the engine.

However, after scanning through this thread, I went out to my car and listened for an engine ping. It doesn't sound any different than it did when I bought it. There are some little tinging type noises, but nothing out of the ordinary I don't think.

What I'd like to know, is how many WRX's are out there that haven't had any issues? I'm certain that there are some failures that haven't made this list, but aren't there probably 10,000+ WRX's w/o problems?

I've got too many other things to worry about right now than my car failing in the first year of ownership. This really stinks

I'm not entirely sure but I've read threads that indicate that one time sound during startup as being the braking system engaging. Something to do with the ABS perhaps.

If you had the problem you'd know it from what I've read.

I noticed the same exact sound. I don't know what the hell it is, but i notice it just after i take off after start-up as well. Im curious to hear what it is, as i have no idea. It doesnt sound like it's coming from the engine bay.

Thanks guys! I just looked it up in my manual.

"ABS system self check: Just after the vehicle is started, you may feel on the brake pedal a vibration similar to when the ABS operates, and you may also hear the sound of the ABS working from the engine compartment. This is caused by an automatic functional test of the ABS system being carried out and does not indicate any abnormal condition."

This is comforting for sure.

i am really close to buying a blue 5door 09 WRX, but after reading all this I am spooked. i called subaru and the build date is 09/08 and the VIN is 9G808248. The car is in gainesville, fl... not sure if that matters. anyone have any input... it would be much appreciated.

BAD, BAD sounds from underhood (what would a cat fight sound like if both cats were made out of metal and the fight was inside a metal garbage can??? - you get the idea...)

Taking it in tomorrow (if it makes the 4 mile drive to dealership). Might as well add me:
503xxx
08/08
7350 miles

1st Subie, 1st all-wheel-drive car, 1st turbocharged car
1st ever toasted engine

There is no way of knowing the official "bad batch" if there is one. I was ready to buy one also, but decided against it. Too much trouble if it happens - and for 24k, resale is going to blow when the next buyer discovers a replaced engine via carfax.
