Is handbrake turns very bad to our subies?
Wondering if anyone uses handbrakes frequently when autox'ing...

Yup, just for ProSolo starts where the car may roll in/out of the lights.

I did some test two years ago in a parking lot (not an event). For ONE airpin on a single cone, the handbrake could save 0.25 sec very easy.
But you have to do it perfectly, have some power (sti at least) and good grip. For any other type of turn it will not be the fastest way around. |

I used the handbrake at the last DC Prosolo for more than the start line!!!!
Of course, I was going straight at the time and was trying to figure out why the car seemed a bit slow. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

If you like your center diff. I would suggest not doing e-brake turns on pavement with the 5 Speeds. I have seen several trannies come to me with problems with the center diffs giving out. Mainly the snap ring on the back of the diff that holds the LSD pack & spider gears in place. It can pop out and then some times lodge themselves in between the setup gears in the tail section of the transfer case. In one case, it destroied the gears and bearings in the tail section along with having to buy a new center diff.
BTW, I rebuild trannies on a regular basis. |

Only time I've used handbrake on an Auto-X was to launch the car on an incline. And that was before I got used to heel-toeing.

The general consensus is that you shouldn't do it if it can be avoided. This is more rallyx than autox, but they suggested pendulum turns and left foot braking as an alternative. Of course, if you have an sti, your center diff opens up when you pull it so you can do it all you want with no ill effects, at least for the center diff. If you do it a lot, you will burn through the shoes for your hand brake in no time. |
