Default Subiesport Issue 26 Feedback

With issue 26 heading to subscribers, I wanted to start a new thread where everyone could discuss the issue. Please let us know what your favorite and least favorite parts of the new issue are.

This is not a thread to discuss the issue delays, state of the magazine business or anything else unrelated to the specific content in Issue 26.

The digital edition will be available to digital subscribers at Subiesport.com on Monday, August 10.

Thanks,

Ryan Douthit, Publisher

Does this mean I can finally post my opinion even though I got it from you at WRXgames ?

I can be a little vague yet get some of my thoughts about it across.

here is my feedback

wow... just waited how long for a 15 page magazine with 5 of those 15 pages being full page ads.

Here is some feedback this mag sucks ass. I did not pay for a DVD or online mag, believe or not I like to read. I truly do want whatever money is left on my subscription back.

Are you fing serious? After all these months you come out with this?

What part of I did not pay for a dvd or online mag was unclear?

Think about the concept of a magazine. It is for people to read in their leisure time. For me that is usually in the morning on the pot, in an airplane, or reading outside. Not in front of a computer or dvd player.

Can I come in tomorrow and we can figure out what the remaining amount is on my subscription so I can get it back?

I was genuinely curious if you had an opinion on the *content* of the issue, and not the *structure* of the issue. You made your point very clear on the latter. Stop by any time, I take it by your post you know where the office is. I'd love to discuss.

i just watched the dvd. i have to say i liked it. it had some good footage. the magazine needs a little more though. 15 pages with mostly ads wasnt worth waiting for adobe to open it. for the dvd the technical parts and rally were pretty good. i think honestly alot of subcribers are not gonna be too thrilled with the changes. im sure you will be the first to know.

I did watch the DVD and while I am still a bit POed about the structure I would say it was interesting content. If you would have put that content into the mag I would probably swung by the office with coffee and muffins as a thank you.

Worth repeating. Thanks, Jason.

The DVD is the equivalent of a 150+ page magazine. Which is not financially feasible these days. Even "back when" we couldn't get Subiesport beyond 100 pages (and even that was subsidized out of my pocket) Hell, both Nissan Sport (no relation) and MC2 the Mini Magazines are around 60 pages these days. They both where previously at 100+ and I wouldn't be surprised if every enthusiast magazine was running on fumes at this point.

Traditional magazines are dying. The format is a walking zombie. I don't like it any more than you do, but we have to face reality that postage, ink and paper have increased significantly since we published issue #1. Postage alone has gone up at least 10 times (bulk is different than first class, which has only increased a couple times) -- and we haven't raised rates. At the same time, in the past year, the ad market has crashed. We're not talking skid landing, more along the lines of straight into a cliff at Mach 5 with still no sign of any real recovery. The traditional American model calls for Ads to cover the majority of the production costs. Subscription income covers postage. That's it. The model was broken to begin with. Now it's unsustainable.

Video is significantly more expensive to produce, content wise, than print. However, the physical production of the discs is lower. There is a potential for equilibrium here. That is if everyone doesn't go ape **** over the mere thought of something new.

I ask that you please look at the content of the DVD before posting your "thoughts" on it. I know, it's tough, we all like to pile on, but I would like to maintain a discussion... not a yelling match. I'd like to buck the trend and not have the vocal minority's voices be the only ones that people hear.

FYI: My dream is that the ad market will rebound, we can keep the DVD and increase the pagecount of the printed copy.

ricochet, will the next issue have more content in the mag? Or is it too early to make that call?

Too early to make that call. I would like to bump to at least 32, but we're taking the print edition one issue at a time.

There will also be a 26.5 PDF supplement coming out in August, but that's not going to print. It will be download only.

As a regular contributor to Subiesport Magazine since its inception, and as a contributor to other publications, both print and online, I couldn't agree with this more. I contribute to all of these print publications through my photography and my writing, and seeing these print publications die off rather suddenly is quite disheartening. Sport Compact Car, Turbo, and many other non-car magazines are dying off...here's even a short list: http://www.magazinedeathpool.com Even my own subscription to EGM was transferred over to Maxim...so now I have to get all of my video game content online now. Hell, pick up a copy of Modified, Super Street, or Import Tuner these days and you can see that they've all shrunk significantly, and if you talk to any of the Editors, they'll all tell you that it's because of the shrinking pool of advertising money. For example, through the first three quarters of 2008, compared to one year ago, automotive advertising is down 23.6%, according to the Publishers Information Bureau. It can be even tougher for a specialty magazine such as Subiesport to draw advertisers since the market is much more concentrated than most other import magazines out there. I honestly do believe that Ryan's made the right choice to stay ahead of the game on this one, and I know for a fact that it hasn't been easy for him. Change is never easy, but in times like these, it's definitely necessary to stay alive.

As for my thoughts on the DVD, I think it was very well done. Seeing and hearing Steve from PIA talk about and drive their Forester was great, even if in a way it puts people like me without work since I'm not writing or taking photos. It was almost Best Motoring-esque, which other than Top Gear, is what I tend to compare these types of videos to. The piece on Tim Bailey tuning was excellent, since I know that the vast majority of people don't know what actually goes on in the cabin during a tuning session, much less what everything looks like when tuning is actually being done. Rally coverage was also excellent, especially with the in-car cameras. I honestly do believe that it's the best rally coverage around, especially given how limited WRC coverage is or will be here in the United States. Overall, all of the video was well done and well edited as well, and the music has definitely improved since some of the earlier DrivingSports videos from back in the day.

I can definitely understand everyone's frustration with the format change, and I myself hope that we can get a thicker print mag along with the DVD for the next issue. After all, I want to keep contributing too! For now though, the DVD and print mag combo is still very good, especially given the overall state of the industry these days.

I didn't sign up for a DVD magazine, i signed up for a paper magazine, i would read and check mine out most of the time when we would go somewhere and i had nothing to do, not sit at my TV and watch it when i am bored, thanks anyway but i would rather have my money back and no suby sport then have a DVD to watch every 8 months or whenever you get around to sending one out.

Well I would just like to get the damn issues I paid for!!!!! And I also paid for a paper MAGAZINE not a DVD. Every dvd I get in a mag goes to the same place everytime without watching, The trash.

I am so upset that I havent gotten any issues lately that I have switched magazines with the thought that Subiesport had died and is now not going anywhere.

FYI I still thumb through my year old mags when I am in my think tank...

I'm still waiting for mine...
I too, paid to get a magazine that I can thumb through during my lunch break or read in bed before going to sleep, or to take camping when I'm hanging out by the fire. I'm not thrilled what so ever about getting a DVD.
I still haven't received mine, but don't think my perspective will change even when I do.
Plus, the numerous month wait between editions, is a HUGE drag. Most likely I'll be asking for my pro-rated refund. I re-upped my subscription somewhat recently and did so because I want to get a "magazine" in my hands, not a DVD to watch.
So, what is the process, or whom do I call, email, send a letter to, to get a refund? I'll make my final decision when I finally get Edition 26, but from the above posts....I'm thinking I'm rather disappointed and would like my money back.

I second this, I still haven't gotten my magazine that was supposedly sent out at the beginning of the month. The USPS does not take 18 days to get from Kirkland WA to Bellevue WA, it maybe takes 3 days max.

I'd love to come in and get the remaining mount of my subscription credited back to me, Please PM me contact info.

i have to be honest. the magazine could have been alot better. its nothing but ads. the dvd was ok.id rather have a normal magazine. for example i just got the new issue of dsport. its 130 pages long and comes with a dvd thats over an hour long. i never got this magazine before but was impressed with it. i think you need to rethink the dvd idea with a little magazine.
