Default Pine Barrens Express 2009 RVSCC Rally

It's going down Nov 21, 2009. Likely the LAST ever PBX rally.

Who's going?

I'll be there navigating for one of my crew guys whose driving his rex. Great roads, too easy to get lost sometimes in the middle of the barrens. Interesting wandering around the cranberry bogs when you can see other competitors off in the distance. Fun in the evening when it gets dark.

ive always wanted to try one of these, however, the part that says "Legal speeds will be used." Does this mean, you have to drive the legal gov posted speed limits, or the rally has its own posted limits?

I guess you've never run a rally before! No time like the present to start. A TSD rally always tells you what speed you are to 'average' for each instruction. Their statement means that there will be no instructions with speeds that are above the legal speed limit.

what do you guys think I would need for this. Currently stock lighting and all season tires? Skid plate, more lights, and snows or something needed?

You will need a co-driver. A calculator and watch would be helpful too. Other than that, you will be fine.

Those things I have I just dont really know what to expect road wise. I should be able to fab up my skid plate but im not sure if my Hankook v4 es tires will be suited for this.

Extra lights are the only thing I might consider. This is sand, pine barrens is all sand. So skid plate, while nice, is not a necessity. You're not going to be going fast enough for tires to make a difference. If I had snows, Id' run them. If I didn't, as long as you've got good tread you'll be okay.

The back roads in The Pines are really sandy with occasional very soft stretches. If you have a choice of tires, choose wider ones for max flotation thru the soft bits. If it's wet leading up to the rally, get ready for some water splashes too. If rallymaster chooses some of the more remote 2-track roads, be prepared for your car to get some good brush scratches...I learnt this the hard way there with a Hertz rental (fortunately I'd taken out the damage waiver). Don't worry tho, the rally is memorable for good reasons, and following the web of roads back in The Pines will be a blast.

Does the entry fill up fast for this? I think we are going enter. We just put a fresh set of snows on Barney the purple 93 Impreza beater, it should be good to go.

It could, but probably not. What's the limit, 70 cars? I don't remember and am too lazy to look it up. 70 probably won't fill up.

We'll be there in an '04 WRX.

As per prep skids are nice if it's rutted to **** like it was last year. Extra lighting is also a big plus.

Hopefully no one will decide to stuff a Jeep off the side of the road this year, and we'll make all of the pre-dinner stages. I took way too many balks last year after getting caught up in the cluster that was the novice class.

Every year it's the last year. If they make enough money, I guarantee it won't be the last one ever...

Pick up a set of Hella 500FF or 700FF lights from PepBoys and run some 100watt H3 bulbs in them. You can toss em on the bug eyes without the need for an unloader and still be legal at the 4 bulb max limit. Alternatively, call Dave or Will at Susquehanna (www.rallylights.com)

Night time in the Barrens is not unreal, it is a bit more challenging. Unreal is driving at night, in white out conditions in snow up to your head lights on one lane mountain passes whilst trying to stay on time at 45mph.

Sounds like you've either done Ted & JB's winter rally, or some Canadian winter (TSD) rallies.

Looks like I'll be there in the right seat for my brother. I think we'll be running with a box, if so, it'll be my first time using a box on a TSD (I've always run either the stock or no-odo class).

Does that mean we'll be seeing the "new car"? I thought I read on the other board that you were building up a GD chassis.

I've not made Mr Buffum's yet, but have spent enough time running around with Mr Smith and the rest of the FLR folks in lake effect. It's not that uncommon to be in front of the snow plows going up a remote southern tier road.

I refuse to run another one of Mr Goddard's events (at least the ones Jon isn't helping with) after the lack luster roads on last years Covered Bridge and the debacle of NEFR's first day this year. At 5 pm you should have in more than 1 mile of stages...

We'll be running sans box, I'll be sitting in the silly as well.

Nah, we built another GC. Waaaaay to many (spare) parts and experience with that chassis. We'll be in street cars at PBX.

For various reasons (not related to the event itself) I haven't run CB for a few years, but I always enjoyed it (running the no-odo class the last few times helped make it more interesting ).

As for NEFR, I was the stage captain for the stages that were canceled on Friday, and I can tell you that Ted had absolutely nothing to do with it. In fact, Ted has been stepping back from the event more and more each of the past couple of years. The reason the stages were canceled on Friday was because of a mix-up that left us with no ambulance. Although the call to cancel the stages was eventually made by people "above" me, many of the competitors didn't feel safe running the stages without an ambulance, and as a regular competitor myself I agreed with them (so too did a number of other officials who also compete), especially in light of the serious accident that had happened at the RNY Rallysprint just a few weeks earlier.

Start by reading the PBX Generals: http://www.rvscc.com/files/Generals_PBX09-1.pdf Page 3 has some basic explanation of how tulips work.

Then do some digging here: http://tsdroadrally.com/ They have a whole section geared toward novice rallyists.

Lastly, see if you can pick up a copy of Clint's book:
Amazon.com: The Road Rally Handbook: The Complete Guide to Competing in Time-Speed-Distance Road Rallies (9780963240101): Clint Goss: BooksAmazon.com: The Road Rally Handbook: The Complete Guide to Competing in Time-Speed-Distance Road Rallies (9780963240101): Clint Goss: Books

Does anyone know if you have to be an SCCA member to run the PBX? I was about to send in an entry form and wasn't sure.
