Wow I think the OPs question has been answered in every conceivable way. Not to mention a quick google search would have saved us 3 pages of regurgitation.

Le Saboteur, I think this is one of the best HP vs TQ debates ever on NASIOC. Carroll Shelby's infamously incorrect statement was only directly quoted one time.

It's horsepower!
Precisely.

2010 mazda breaks loose easier than ur 95 escort did because it's newer. Clutch is fresh, pressure plates are tight, bushings are firm, driveline slack is minimal. When any car revs and lets the clutch out really fast the excess power that the engine is making has got to go somewhere. In the '10 mazda the driveline components are strong enough that the excess power breaks the wheels loose and is then turned into heat and smoke as the wheels slide on the pavement. In ur '95 escort all those parts were worn so thats where your power disappeared to, most likely your clutch was weaker than the force neccesary to break ur wheels free i.e. your clutch burned up instead.

Having been the previous owner of a '93 Escort.. I can partially agree.. and partially blame it on the car only having 88hp.

Seriously, though.. I could spin through first gear easily in my old 'scort on my winter wheels. I actually installed poly front bushings to tame the wheel-hop. On my summer wheels & tires I couldn't break em loose when launching... of course, I also had over 200,000mi on the clutch.
