I just brought home my EJ20G in the back of my 93 Impreza Wagon (1.8, 5-speed, AWD) The "importer" said its a mid 90's Japanese Sedan with 40K miles and 260hp. There is no ECU and the engine harness is chopped off. Here are the only things I know about this motor........ Coil on Plug, Cam Covers finned above the spark plug holes, the intercooler piping does not run under the intake, the injectors are Gray, There are 2 coolant lines that may have went to an AWIC under the intake, There is a tag on the timing cover but I can only read parts of it-unless the bar code still reads........ How do I identify this engine and make it run in my car, on the cheap. I shot my budget already: 250$ Car, 150$ rims and tires, 450$ EJ20G, 50$ excedy oem clutch. So that leaves me pocket change to get this running. IE no expensive ecu's, new oem wire harness's, aftermarket EMS. I can pull parts from a junk yard and throw them over the fence (JK) or buy used parts locally or online. Can anyone offer me any advice or info on this swap? I am going to do this soon!

well since this engine was never sold in the US, you will find no parts for it at the junk yard.

the closest thing you will find wiring harness wise is a 1991-94 turbo legacy engine harness. then this will have to be modded to make it work.

then you will have to fine an EJ20G ECU.

your stock 1.8L MAF may be the same as the stock EJ20G maff. check part numbers.

but looks like you still need about a grand worth of parts to make this work in your car...

The 1.8 maf is most likely the same. Add an 4 channel ej20g igniter to the list if you plan to use the coils it came with.

Default Wow I am a little excited now!

Now Im not sure but this may be a really good engine. Ive never seen a JDM engine this clean! I was trippin on how polished the cam/valve covers are........then upon closer inspection I found factory red paint in the crevasses and behind some mouning points! And it is deff a T-05H turbo! So I at least have a 95-96 WRX manual engine or......dare I hope? an STi? Man I am stoked on this find! I just looked and I dont have an Ignitor or a boost actuator I found the hoses chopped. So my first and most important question: Will a 91-94 Legacy SS turbo ecu and wire harness be made to run my engine? Cause I allready found 2 at a local junkyard! What about the coil packs? can I just use my 1.8 lost spark set up or the Leggy's? And I found out the Legacy has the same type ecu plug as my wagon. Long or short answer yes or no!

there is no short answer.

yes it can be done with a turbo legacy harness. no the legacy ECU will not work. you will have to find an EJ20G ECU. but get the whole legacy harness, with all sensors and plugs.

you can use the COP ignition but i would do the USDM coil conversion right away. this way you wont need to find/wire in the ignitor.

when you are ready i have all the wiring diagrams to convert the legacy harness to run an EJ20G.

fair chance that its not a legacy gt ej20g due to the single bolt coils

cheapest method would be a stinger ecu (after market)

i went this route (engine+scab together parts) the first time i swapped ...i learned a lot the car ran decent after ~18 months .. and i swapped it out with a complete engine ecu 2 years later
