Default there may be this thread already. engine swap

i was thinking of putting the 2.5L sti motor in my wrx. i blew the head gasket. i know i'll need the motor, tranny, and ecu. i did a bunch of upgrades to my wrx with a 16 g turbo and etc. i was thinking of keeping the turbo and whatnot. or upgrading to a bigger turbo, but the question is, what all do i need? and a rough estimate of cost? or would it just be easier to fix up and bore out the 2.0L to 2.2L and stroker kit? please i need help. i'm leaving for the navy monday and i'm just hoping i can get an answer and whatnot before i leave so i know what to do when i have the time.

Well, long story short, if you want an EJ257 in your 2.0 WRX, you can A) Swap just the shortblock and use your WRX heads (No need tranny or new ECU). B) Full EJ257 w/ STi heads (No need tranny or new ECU (unless you want to run AVCS)).

Why can't you just replace your blown head gasket?

What year WRX do you have now?

2005. since i need to pull my motor out, why not upgrade. ya know? i was thinking of taking it to a performance shop and seeing what it'd cost. plus i'm not exactly sure if it's the head gasket

install a 255/257 block and get your heads matched properly for it. get your tune. be happy with TQ! thats the easy way, and the most cost effective. then sell your short block for a couple extra bucks afterwards.

Since this is along the same lines I thought id chim in..my olan is too swap an extra 2.0 I have in my swap ready 95 impreza. If been in contact with east coast swappers and im aware ill need a merged wire harness from a wrx and a section of my impreza. But heres my question. ..does anyone know if the 95's tranny will bolt up too the 2.0? The imprezas tranny has a shorter gear ratio than the wrx's = faster 0-60 im not concerned about top end. Postive input would be apriciated thanks guys.

RS harness would be similar to your 95. as long as that RS harness was merged with a wrx engine/ecu portion, it will be fine

255/257 block with your wrx heads works fine for a quick swap. Easiest too. Otherwise, you're into swapping heads, harness etc to run a full longblock swap. What are you trying to do, save money? swap quickly? Theres plenty of ways you can get rolling again.

Both save money and swap quickly. My wrx valves are pretty ****ed. If I was to keep the heads and change to the 255/257 block what would need to be done with the heads?

Some have just used the heads as is. iirc with an odd compression ratio compared to stock. The downside being less efficient at moving exhaust gases out of the chamber. The bores are different, but the heads still seal the cyl properly.

The other option is having the heads cnc'd to match the bore like millennium does.
